I was rewatching the 2014 Pre classic when Rupp set the AR and Mo was commentating on the race and talked about how efficient and smooth Rupp's stride was compared to his own. Based on Mo's poor first marathon. Could Rupp be better than his teammate in one event finally? If so where would he rank in the world?
I think he could one day be the fastest non African ever over the marathon. Salad bar has been sensible with his progressive overload and everything points to him being a male Paula type of runner.
This is why I really am interested in how well he does in that 10 mile road race. It might be better for Rupp to move to the marathon sooner rather than later. It seems like he has peaked in the track events.

Paula was one of the most fearless front runners the world has ever seen. What about Rupp?
It's a shame Rupp is wasting time in a dead event like the 10k. Assumption is he'll move up after Rio, but why not now? He could always do both at the Olys with the 10k on day 1 and the marathon at the end.

Neither one is scared at all of needles.
The depth in women's running is not the same, and therefore it's an apples and pears comparison. Two world class female runners can easily run away from a field, this is not the case for men's track racing and therefore Rupp can't do this. The guys got balls though, we saw that this year.

Why does a 10 mile race tell you anything, Les? Rupp's already Rupp a few half marathons.

I'm interested in his CURRENT shape. Also as a comparison to Farah's Great North Run result. This could be a test run for him. If he does something similar to past road run results, he'll probably again double 5/10k at Rio. But if he pops something really special, he and Salazar will have to sit down and really think about what event(s) to run in the Olympics. If he chooses the marathon then the loss of his kick won't have much bearing. Bear in mind too, that the best marathoners tend to skip the Olympics. It might be easier to get a medal than the 5/10k. On the other hand, the Olympics are a summer sport and temps will be in the '70s. I don't know how well Rupp would handle that.
I see a 2:02 time coming after Rio.

While I want Rupp to stay focused on the 10k, I actually agree that he'd be better off trying the 10k/marathon double at the Olympics than that 10k/5k. The 10k is a one and done event. He then has the whole Olympics to rest for the marathon that will be run at a slower pace than his 10k. If he does the 5k not only does he have to run an additional round, but he'll have to run faster on likely tired legs.
Realistically he could enter the 10k/5k/marathon triple and actually qualify for all three given how the trials are done. In this modern day (unless USA track continues to decline) I think that would be a huge contribution toward his legacy more than another silver or a bronze in anything might be.

Extra red blood cells tend to make one more confident.
By the time Galen Rupp retires he will go down the history as the most prolific Caucasian runner in history ..He showed young white runners out there with hard work you can really beat East Africans ..I can truly, see him producing 2.05 -2.06 no problem

I do not think that is true. Really great runners are not able to be there b/c of limits on entry numbers, but plenty of great marathoners are always at the games. Might not be as deep as London but you make it sound like it will be so much easier if Guppy runs the marathon. I would actually put money on Guppy not getting a medal in the marathon.
He has the potential to be a better marathoner than Mo, but whether or not he will depends on how seriously Mo takes the marathon. When Mo ran his 2:08 he wasn't even gearing all of his workouts towards the marathon. I forget who said it but he was doing 300 or 400 repeats very very fast while he was pretty close to his marathon debut. Farah only did that race for a paycheck. If he put forth 100% of his focus and effort into the marathon I don't think Rupp would have much of a chance.
