For a high school distance runner being recruited, how do interested coaches prioritize performances between the different "sports"? I realize that times in XC have little meaning, but how much would stock would a coach put in a comparative place finishes in XC vs. outdoor track times? Or track times vs. road races (certified courses)?
I know a high school runner who is very talented. Because of some circumstances, he is looking to stop running XC with his current team, this year. He isn't a head case or bucking the authority of coaches. Running track for the team in the winter and spring is also in question. He is looking to focus on road races, and maybe running some open track meets in the spring. His training is continuing at a high level, but his immediate goals would shift from XC championship races in November to racing on the roads. Even if he puts up great times in road races against quality competition (albeit, not necessarily high school runners), how would the coaches recruiting him view this?
