Im a h.s. coach, have been for some time, but recently getting into core exercises with the kids. I think pushups can be done several times a week, with alternating hard and easy days. Any other opinions?

I am without a weight room so push ups are done about 2-3 times a week on "core" days, to gain upper body strength w/out bulk. MWF, just finish up the run and use each corner of the football field to stop and drop to fire off a set of both (walk to the next corner to recover). Do 1-3 loops?!
No mr chest!
In my HS XC days the coach had us do 3 sets of 20 pushups (and same for situps) everyday during the stretching portion of our practice...after a mile warmup, but before the actual workout/run. Each set of 20 pushups/situps was spead throughout the whole stretching routine (which probably lasted 15-20 minutes) rather than 3 sets of 20 back to back. On race days, we'd eliminate the pushup/situp part altoghether.

You should do a lot more then 3 x 20 sit ups. 3 x 20 push ups is not comprable. It should be more like 5 - 8 minutes of continuous sit up variations, including cross - lateral ones as well, not just regular old crunches.
