The Charles is relatively well lit in the city areas and is perpetually well travelled. The Fens/Muddy River paths are great during the day, but they are poorly lit at night and historically have not been safe areas for any kind of pedestrian traffic. If you are running with someone it's fine, but you may single yourself out to someone around there running alone.
you'll be fine going alone around the charles at night -- especially this time of year -- but a woman running alone at night is not really a good idea anywhere. find somebody to run with if you can.
I ran a cool-down run around the Charles at 8pm two weeks ago after an indoor track workout. More like a freeze-down run. For the most part, except for a couple of drunken bums, and two MIT students on bikes, I didn't see a soul. It did cross my mind that if someone had meant to do me harm, there would have been essentially no witnesses and no help nearby. So be careful.
By the same token, I did my warm-up before the track workout around the Charles as well. This was at 6:30. There were lots of people out then, runners and others, particularly in the stretch near BU.
what is wrong with a woman running alone, a man runs alone all the time
Blue Hill Avenue, forget the Mace, they snort that stuff for breakfast!
"I run alone and drink alone"!
