i have always had a pretty easy time avoiding it. but when that vid of the women race walking auto-loaded i just about spit out my coffee. it is so damn funny looking.
I used to teach middle school, and the start of that race looks like a bunch of 7th graders trying to get to the lunch line first. that is EXACTLY how they move when they are trying to get somewhere fast without getting in trouble for running in the hall.
i know it's been done to death...but HOW is this a sport??

Except for one thing. Race walking is NOT actually a sport. It is T&F trolling the rest of the world.

Elite race walkers train up to 8 hours a day between walking, running and other forms of cross training.
Yohan Deniz - the French World record holder in the 50km walk incorporated a lot of swimming in his training regimen during the last year.
Elite race walkers have higher V02 max scores than elite runners. Walkers, cross country skiiers and rowers have the highest scores.
If you look at the bodies of elite race walkers they invariably possess six packs and well defined pectorals. Many distance runners don't have those features.
An elite race walker capable of 18:40 (5000) and 1:16 (20km) could run 14:30/30:00/65:00 with minimal pure running training.

Can't post screen shot but coming down the final stretch the race walk winner today was running. Pause the video anywhere on the final 100 and both feet will be off the ground.
Its just as bad as the triple jump. Both need to be suspended from competition.

Don't as 'Why?', ask yourself 'Why Not?'
I suggest you try walking (one foot always in contact with ground) at 4:00 per km speed (just over 6 mins mile pace).
It is incredibly difficult and these guys can race at that pace for 20km or just a bit slower.
Elite race walkers are among the fittest and strongest athletes on the planet.

So elite male race walkers possess the running talents of elite female runners. That's NOT impressive!
Despite training 8 hours a day and having high VO2, that's the best they can run! Pathetic! Clearly, they come from the least talented pool of athletes in track and field.
There are probably fewer than 500 race walkers on the entire planet. Regional high school cross country championships have more competitors than race walking has on the entire planet.
What is the largest number of finishers ever in a race walk? Under 100 probably.
What's the largest number of finishers ever in a running race? 80,000!
In one running race there are more competitors than race walking has had in every single race walking event ever held combined!

curling is popular at least - it is an actual sport that people play. It probably should not be an olympic sport tho.
