Let's be honest regardless of whether or not her shoe fell off their is no way she could have closed anywhere near 1:57, I believe her 800 pr is 2 flat. I'd much rather be in her position and have an excuse for her poor performance unlike Rowbury who simply couldn't hang with the top runners. In Simpson's post race interview she didn't seem bitter at all, I think she herself knew she didn't have the wheels for that last 400.
I don't think Simpson is afraid to go out there and give her very best whatever the outcome. She is a competitor who doesn't make excuses. If she gets beat she gets beat, but I think she'd much rather be able to have at it then have this happen.
As someone else wrote on another thread, after a perfect 700m warmup, more than half of which was run at her half marathon pace, giving her a flying start, she should know she can run 1:58.XX. If you told her ahead of time that was what it was going to take, no problem. When she learned it at race speed as the others came by and knocked her shoe off, no chance.
I didn't see the race but as I understand, she was ahead of Dibaba when Dibaba took off so maybe she could have run just under 1:58 flat relative to Dibaba. Yes, she still gets beat but given that Hassan's PR is about 1.3 seconds faster what do you expect. Faith C may not have the PR but she just needs the right race. Simpson and Rowbury have the capability of being in that group, just like Seyaum.
Agreed. Simpson is a competitor with the heart of a lion. Losing her shoe was the worst thing that could have happened except perhaps being knocked to the ground.

Has anyone seen the video and can identify WHEN the shoe came off? Was she clipped by another runner? Just a race thing or what?
Agree with everyone else. She is a LIONESS, a fierce competitor. She doesn't care about having an excuse for why she fell off the pace, she would've rather had an opportunity and failed than no real opportunity at all.

You people are crazy. Until Jenny S. actually runs 1:58.XX for 800m, she is NOT capable of closing 1:58.XX in a 1500m race.

I won't be surprised if she walks away from the sport after 2016.
That post-race interview was as pathetic as any I have ever heard from a former champion: so full of satisfaction, a lack of desire to continue to perform at a high level; a rationalization that she's "already done so much in the sport."

In a Letsrun video interview she says someone clipped her from behind with 600m to go. She said if it happened at 200 or 300 to go maybe she could have dealt with it but that 600m was a long time to deal with that and kept her from kicking. You hate to see somebody make excuses but I think it's a valid one in this case. She did, however, look gassed immediately after making the strong move to follow Dibaba.
I would still be interested to see a video showing it was actually 600m to go and she wasn't just misremembering,because she said herself races are like car accidents in that they are kind of a blur and you can't remember what exactly happened.

with around 800 to go JSimp was in the lead in lane 1. A crew started to pass her in lane two. Jenny saw she was about to be boxed in, so she pushed and shoved out of lane one before the pack sealed her in. During that shoving someone stepped on her heel. She carried on for 100 meters with the shoe half off, then kicked it off and that was that.
So it really was her bet that it was the right move to muscle out of the box with 800 to go. Hard to say it was a bad move - but it cost her. And it was her doing - she can't blame someone for making a rash move and sabatoging Her.

I don't think so. This reminded me too much of her flop at NCAAs her senior year. A lot of build-up and then she fails spectacularly and magically looks good doing so b/c she had an excuse. I bet she helped the shoe off.
I still think she's better suited for the steeple.

She got clipped with 800 to go when she abruptly moved out from behind Dibaba. The back of her shoe slipped off her heel and she tried to keep it on for a couple hundred meters then kicked it off.

I was impressed by how gracious and upbeat Jenny remained during what must have been severe disappointment. She is a great competitor. The fact that most people did not even notice her lose her shoe just demonstrates her guts in continuing to race. I would have loved to have seen what two-shoe Jenny could have done over those last two laps.

Looking at photos on prettysporty.com I thought that too. It looks like Simpson pushed to her right to get out almost causing a collision with Aregawi. Maybe the shoe was stepped on there.
