Calm down, the announcers said he was 3rd as well. They probably were watching and then posted. The brojos get a lot of crap on these boards, most of which is deserved, but this isn't.

He did need to jog faster at the end

he took it very easy and had some trouble at the last 2 barriers because he took the safe approach. wont happen in the finals.

I remember the last time he didn't take the safe approach in the final two barriers.

Besides it was clear from watching the race.

You weren't watching the race if you didn't think that was almost a huge, huge, huge upset.

Jager was not taking that easy. He was fighting for it the final 100m.

The final could be very different but an 8:40 race is not what he wants.

All I can say is, if you don't race for 6 weeks leading up to a major championship, you have done yourself a disservice.

This course of action is 100% on the coaches head.

Who can explain Jerry's continual lack of racing for his charges.

With that said if the pace is not at sub 8:10 pace from a minimum of 5 laps out. Jäger will not medal.

I want him to medal so badly. But I fear his lead up will limit him.

Training is no substitute for racing.

Racing and calousing and sharpening are just as important as altitude and strength and rest.

I hope this group has not neglected this ever so important balance.

When did Jäger run his best? All within 4 weeks of running 2 steeples and an all out PR 1500.

Relax. He ran 3.32 off of much more than a 6 week break. He and the rest of the BTC were doing more than building strength in Utah at altitude. You can certainly sharpen without racing yourself into the ground a la centro in Stockholm. Some of their workouts were nothing short of amazing- one of them would not be believed if not seen. How about some positive energy toward EJ and the rest of our American crew?!

Yes ... he got 2nd by all of .01 sec. 8:41.51 to 8:41.52 ... 4th was 8:41.65.

Hence he was .14 from not qualifying instead. Unbelievable letsrun could make that mistake with such a massive margin.

Slowest time qualifier ended up being 8:30.07

For me it looked like he really had to kick hard to move up to that spot. C. Kipruto on the other hand moved away the last 50 with ease, looking around. It was Kipruto I was very worried about with 250-300m to go.

Birech looked great. Kemboi looked great, although going in I didn't know what to expect from him; had done nothing since winning at Pre Classic early late May. He has been around forever it seems, and his winning ways have to end eventually.

B. Kipruto looked pretty good as well ... maybe straining some and not kicking away as easily as the other 3, but as good as Jager at least, to me.

I had Jager picked for bronze. Now I'm having a hard time seeing it, with the 4 Kenyans to deal with, all clearly coming into great form at the right time.

Who knows ... pretty sure the final won't be in the 8:25-40 range.

Likely, the final will play out with Birech going to the front after the first k, followed by kipruto and jager. Kemboi will lurk around 5th. 2nd k will be around 2.40, and last k around 2.35 for the winner. Jager's best chance for a medal stems on a fast race, in my opinion.

First off, how surprising all three Americans made the final. Last time that happened?

I thought he got it safely enough. Exciting sure, but he looked good. Saved energy. And the trials and semis never count in the finals anyway, other than the impact they leave. He had an easy workout. Sprint at the end. Others in heats 2 and 3 less mellow a run.

He might not win, but he ran well enough, got unlikely on some positioning and bumping in the final lap leading to some jumps that slowed him. And did what he needed to do. Good practice for the final.

Take a deep breath. Jager us in the final with a minimum amount of effort.

I don't understand the comment that Kemboi has done nothing since Pre. Did any of you actually watch the Kenyan trials? It was clear he was controlling that race from behind. Everyone understood who the boss was -- the same as the old boss.

in the distances, it becomes kind of a lotto in a slow race, what can happen is when you think the final is a given you're not mentally prepared to hit the pedal hard. in the 800 m this kind of approach spells disaster.

hopefully this is the case. i'd bet that jager will show up in the final.
