These nine women were part of group of pioneers who competed and fought for women’s equality in running in the 1950s and early 1960s. Throughout most of the 1950s the longest distance United States women could officially race was 220 yards.
Here are the presentation times for each panelist for this nearly three hour call.
Gary Corbitt – Introduction
4:22: Merry Lepper – Completed the Culver City Marathon in 1963 in 3:37.
13:28: Chris McKenzie – First female to run longer than 220 yards in U.S. competition. First women to run up Mount Washington and competed in the historic 1961 Manchester Road Race.
29:11: Grace Butcher – Fought the AAU to allow 440 yards and 880 yards competition for women.
Indoor 880 National Champion (1958-60), Outdoor 880 Champion – 1959, American Record Holder
48:10: Julia Chase Brand – The Rosa Parks of Women’s Long Distance Running. Finished in the historic Manchester Road Race in 1961.
1:01:33: Roberta Bobbi Gibb – Three time winner of the Boston Marathon (1966 – 1968). First women to run the Boston Marathon.
1:25:40: Sara Mae Berman – Three time winner of the Boston Marathon (1969 - 1971).
1:50:20: Doris Brown Heritage – Two time Olympian (1968 & 1972) and five times International Cross-County Champion (1967 – 1971).
2:15:49: Judy Shapiro Ikenberry – National champion in both the marathon (1974) and 50 miles in 1977.
2:32:20: Arlene Pieper Stine – Completed the Pikes Peak Marathon in 1959.

Donna Gookin – Pioneer runner – competed in 40 marathons and five 50 mile ultramarathons.
Joan Ullyot, MD – Pioneer runner and author -marathon best 2:47 at age 48.
