I just received word from @usatf that I have been left off the #Beijing2015 team.
Does a governing body have the right to negate individual contracts?
wow, I did not see that coming. this will hit the news big time.
This is FUBAR.
I don't understand. Why doesn't he just go to worlds and then Sue/protest/challenge/engage in professional dialogue/whatever afterwards? Missing worlds is really mainly hurting him not USATF.
Here come the lawyers. If Tyler McCandless is suiting for $300k, then this should be a good one. USATF will be decertified within the next 4 years.
Well I guess they called his bluff. Next time just run, Nick.
Enjoy wearing your dorky brooks while watching from your couch
It's no big deal for him. He's done 11 internationals for team USA. I also think it's great that he's taking a stand for what he really believes in. However, let's not bite the hand that feeds us too hard: Nike keeps track and field alive here in the United States.

That's not what "called his bluff" means
Nike World Headquarters is in Beijing for heaven sakes. Nike USA can't let Symmonds disrespect the Mandarins.

Nick symmonds is a Canadian hero for all of us. Let us pray

The sport would be much better off without Nike.
It's not Nike as much as USATF. When's the last time you saw quotes around a non-defined word in a contract. It seems that "official" (with the quotes as in the contract) was the problem. USATF should have something more clear and well defined for the athletes.
Nike will lose more than Nick in this situation.
Right or wrong many people think Nike is wrong. Nick is becoming a hero even though he is running horribly.
CEO of Brooks tweeted in support of Nick. His contract will probably increase and his public image most certainly will. All while running slower than High School kids.

Again - its USATF that's the issue. It's ok for Nike to have a uniform contract with USATF. USATF's terms of how they enforce it are what's wrong.
Anyone that didn't thing this was going to be the ultimate outcome if crazy and Nick knew it to. Him being left off the team is all part of a bigger picture about athletes rights. You can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs. Nick is being pretty selfless here in fighting for the rights of all the athletes competing in Beijing.

I disagree. 1) if he goes , no one pays attention.
2) I also am not sure it's hurting him.. It's setting him up for a lifetime of speaking engagements and he's not in great form. He can get pumped up for 2016..
It's called a win win.

Wrong.
Nick is one of the best 800 runners the USA has ever seen. Strong #2 after Johnny Gray.
But Nick's career in the "oval office" is running down. That's just a fact. He is an 800 man moving into his 30s.
He has run on almost a dozen national teams. What is more important, going and placing 4th-8th in Beijing, or establishing himself as THE preeminent athletes' advocate in the country.
He has a happy and interesting career ahead as an athlete's rep or eventually national rep to the IAAF, IOC etc, or as a race/meet director. He will probably change this sport, which after a championship win/medal is probably his top goal in the sport.
