Serious post. He weighs 190 currently and can run about 18.30 - 6-minute pace. He lifts weights a lot but can get down to 140 with more running and less lifting. What should he be able to run at 140?

2 seconds per mile per unnecessary pound
50 lb loss = 100 seconds per mile faster
100 seconds x 3.1 = 310 seconds
So if my math is correct (it probably isnt) he would run a 5k 310 seconds faster. That would be 13:20.
Since you ran 18:30, Jack Daniels estimates your VO2 max is about 54.4 ml/kg/min...
Not that it would be healthy for you to lose that much weight (dependent on height), but if you did, your VO2 max would increase by roughly 14.3 ml/kg/min, and you would theoretically be "able" to run 15:18 according to Jack Daniels' VDOT chart. Keep in mind I'm not factoring in muscle strength, lactate threshold, or muscle fiber type changes. This is strictly talking about increased AEROBIC capacity due to loss of weight (less work needed to run a given speed). If you lost all that weight, would you be able to run 15:18? Probably not. You would have to increase your lactate threshold and train your muscles to be able run that fast.
So, if all you did was lose the weight, I would randomly guess 16:30 would be your new 5k time without any extra training to increase lactate threshold and muscular strength. That is a very raw, biased, speculative guess.
No way is a 6' tall 190lb 18:30 guy ever going to drop to 140lbs.
Many (most?) world-class distance runners weigh more than that (140 @ 72") in terms of lbs/inch.
I am 5'8 and it is literally impossible for me to go skinnier than 140 and I already looked insanely skinny. How do you think you are going to get as skinny as I am when you are 4 inchnes taller?

By "literally" you mean "practically" or "I don't know how to lose more weight". It is literally easily possible for you to weigh less than 140 at your height.
At 5-11 206 I ran a 5k in 22 minutes. At 5-11 187 I ran a 5k in 17:43 and a road mile in 5:05. At 171 pounds which I am successfully working towards now I think I will go sub 17. I came up with the goal of 171 by watching to much MMA fighters that are my height and 171 looks like an ideal weight for me.
Like one other poster said in theory the much faster times seems reasonable but you never no how weak or strong you will feel at certain weights. If all you do is lose weight and not have great nutrition and not work out you could find yourself leaner but weaker. I have felt that before and it makes you want to gain muscle and eat when you feel that way so it is a little tricky.
Also, what can your friend do for a flat out 400 meters? Will give us some more info. I ran 60.44 at 42 years old shortly before running 505 and 1743 at 187 pounds.
i often get made fun of for being a heavier runner. I am 5'10 and 180lbs.
In 2014, I ran 4.29 for the 1600m and 16.04 for 5k. I drop off significantly in longer races.

I'm 6'1" and weigh 143#. I'm an 800 runner and I lift twice a week. I eat as much as I feel like and only run ~40 mpw. This is just the shape I am. Different people of the same height can have vastly different ideal weights.
Bekele- 5'6" 123#
Ben True - 6'2" 146#
Rudisha - 6'3" 154#
Nick summoned - 5'10" 165#
Solinsky - 6'1" 170#
Asbel kiprop - 6'3" 137#
Centrowitz - 5'9" 133#
Farah - 5'5" 128#

bwahaha those numbers are a joke. Ben True and Solinsky might be that tall in high heels. And Solinsky was much lighter than 170 as a serious pro.
I'm 6 foot.
I could run a 17:30 when I weighed in low 130s and an 18:30 when I weighed closer to 180.
I always weighed between 150 to 155 when I ran anything faster than a 17.
Point is that he might not have to lose that much weight to see his times go down.
To answer your question he should be about to run 17:30s (5:40 pace) and I'd be surprised to see him break 16:40. (5:20 pace).
I'm also assuming he is gradually dropping weight and increasing mileage, so this could take a year or two to run closer to his potential.
