This is a follow up to the thread that debated the possibility that Micahel Johnson was a drug cheat. It may shed a little light on this situation, and also into possible corruption within the IAAF in attempts to protect its image and top stars
This is a recount told to me first hand by a current sports agent from the Global Sports Communication group (Jos Hermanns) at the Athens Olympic Games.
take what you will from this account, my retelling is accurate - decide for yourself what it means.
On the 1st of August 1996 Michael Johnson ran 19.32 to smash the WR in the 200, and set probably the most outstanding track mark in the WR books today. After the race, Michael Johnson was summoned to provide a sample for drug testing as per IOC rules at the time (also for World records). Standing outside the trug testing zone was MR X(will not use the name) a sports manager from Global Sports Communication, who had Paul Bitok (later would win a 5000m silver medal) in the drug testing area providing a sample. As Mr X waited for Bitok to provide a sample, Michael Johnson entered the zone, with Istavan Gyuli - head of IAAF doping control. The entered together, and then exited together within 1 minute to the amazement of MR X. Paul Bitok later told Mr X, that as he was filling in papers regarding his test, Michael Johnson appeared to write his name down and sign, with Gyuli looking on, and then walk straight out.
Now this is a first hand account. Obviously it doesnt prove 100% that Johnson was a cheat, BUT, well.... take from it what you will. I know what I think.
The worst thing for me about Johnson, is how he publicly speaks out about drug cheats, and that they are scumbags, and should be banned for life etc etc. At least guys like Linford Christie etc count their lucky stars for getting away with it (and for cheating to olympic gold medals) but its as if Johnson is rubbing all our noses in it, that he got away with it far and square and its all fair play.
folks, its a true story, make up your own minds.
