Solid D1 throws programs

She will most likely be a walk-on unless her marks improve a lot.

Great academics so either Harvard or Rice spring to mind as possibilities for her.

She should definitely consider all DII options, with DII she can still get a fantastic education and make a significant contribution to her track team depending on the conference. Many DII schools can and will offer some sort of financial compensation, and with grades like those she should qualify for some sort of academic scholarship.

University of Louisville's Dale Cowper is a great throws coach. If she's looking at economics as a major, I can assure you first hand that the Econ degree is very solid.

With your daughter's academic standing, I would look at high end academic schools at the division 1 level. A couple Ivies may take a look, definitely some Patriot League as well. Another one to consider is William & Mary, they seem to have a good thing going in the throws right now, and are a "public Ivy". I'd reach to coaches and these places to gauge their interest. Just some thoughts, good luck to your daughter.

I will put in a plug for Rice (full disclosure - I am an alum of the men's track & XC programs). Other than Stanford there is no school that offers a better combination of elite academics, Div. I athletics, and year-round weather conducive to training. (Vanderbilt would be the only other school in the discussion but they do not appear to have a throws coach or any throws athletes on their roster at present.) The head coach, Jim Bevan, was an assistant for both men and women during my time at Rice and while he did not coach me directly I certainly knew him and he is just a great guy, always positive and supportive. Rice does have a dedicated assistant coach for throws on staff, too. They are also in the midst of building brand new dedicated team facilities opening this fall for the track (and soccer) teams:

I would have to say The University at Buffalo- year after that guy is getting it done with decently talented athletes. Heck, Jon Jones (2015 NCAA Champion) was a 53' high school shot putter 5 years ago. He's now throwing almost 69'. That's equivalent to roughly 77' the the 12lb high school shot. I would say Buffalo is a solid decision. Buffalo is a great academic/research university with tons to offer.

These are all great schools! She has heard from some Ivy Schools, but what we are finding out is that most of the Ivy Schools don't have undergraduate business. William and Mary is a school she is interested in, but she has had no interest from them (athletically).

There are some weight throw meets within a 6 hour drive from us throughout the fall, so she is planning on training and competing in a few of those and get her discus and hammer PRs improved. Unfortunately we cannot find any meets with javelin in the fall.

We will definitely check out Rice and Buffalo.

In recent years, their throwing program has really grown. This past NCAAs, they sent two male discus throwers (one of which won the NCAA title) and one female javelin thrower (made 2nd team). Their facilities were upgraded in the last 5 years (dedicated in 2014) and they are Olympic caliber.

I would recommend that you check out their recruiting standards as goals for general D1 recruitment/walk-on criteria. Can be helpful during her senior year on what to aim for. It looks like she's close to the Penn discus recruiting standard already if her PR is 130'.

I know Brown also has a very strong throwing program (they had a female frosh who went from 157-10 in HS to 176 in her 1st collegiate competition, ultimately ending the year at 183-8 and making it to NCAAs (2nd team) and winning the USATF Junior title in the discus, while also scoring in both the shot put and hammer/weight throws at the conference meet), but I believe Penn has the stronger business/economics program.

You might point out to your daughter that despite the lack of undergraduate business majors at the Ivys, plenty of their alumni do just fine in the business world.

I would also look at Grand Valley State, or Findley, or Ashland.....any of the big GLIAC track schools. GVSU was just ranked the 5th best college for women athletes.....and that is a list with all of the D-I schools. GVSU has a great track program and a decent throws coach. GVSU is a class act and a great school. I have yet to meet someone who didn't just love going to school there.

If you check out Rice, might as well check out A&M 90 miles away - big and close alumni network would be great for business majors. Coach de la Garza finds athletes and does a good job coaching them. Brea Garrett never threw the hammer until college and he coached her up to NCAA champion in the weight throw. Katy Doyle never threw a javelin until she got to A&M and she's another NCAA champion. He took a girl that threw 124' in the DT as a HS senior to 195' in the HT in 2 years.

USC is a school that would meet with what you're looking for, with a top 20-25 business school, and a top-5 throws program, not to mention a chance to win a national title (USA #1 recruiting class for women coming in).

But your daughter would have to improve a TON to meet their scholarship standards: 170DT/165JT.

I have seen some pretty lofty scholarship standards at a variety of schools. Leaves me with the impression that they don't want to give scholarship money to throwers and just want walk-ons.

Another thing we are concerned about is being recruited by a coach and then having the coach leave for a different university. This happened to another thrower she knows, last year at the University of Iowa. But that is just how college athletic programs are nowadays.

She is currently working with a very good NAIA throws coach in our area. It will be interesting to see how much she can improve in DT, hammer, and jav with his help.

I mean if you are looking for academics, Notre Dame has the #1 Business School in the country for the past 4 years. They have had success in the throws on the women's side.
