I ran a 5k in 14:43 recently. If I raced a 3200, what do you think I could run? And yes I know that I can find out by racing a 3200 myself. But I want to know what is a good pace to go out in, and know how aggressive I could be when I do the time trial. Is sub 9:00 possible?
Was that run on the track?
Inversely I have run 9:22 for 3200m and am wondering what an equivalent 5000m time would be on the track. I've ran a 15:40 road 5K (flat, 10 or 12 turns probably).

I would say 15:10 or thereabouts.
14:43 for 5K puts you in Elijah Armstrong territory. So, national elite for HS, maybe 8:50 or below for 3200.
But your question is kind of odd, because what kind of freshman who has run a fast 5K and is trying to predict a 3200 time hasn't already run that distance?

This question makes no sense. If a high school freshman ran 14:43 we would have heard about it--and he would have already run a 3200. A college frosh wouldn't be running a 5k cross-country race nor would he be running a 3200.
I just finished my freshman year of college. I only ran 9:38 in high school last year. Training went really well this past year so I clearly improved a lot. With a year, I want to know what my 3200 time could be now, to see how much I improved from last year's 9:38.
And yes the 5k was on a track
You have improved, but since that time was on a track, you haven't improved as much as you might hope.
I found one running calculator that put you at a 3200 of about 8:57, but I think that's a LITTLE fast. I would put you at about 9:09.
I guess you are just curious as you likely won't be running a 3200 again ever. I never did again after I graduated from high school.

So going on a message board and getting an opinion on something that is so objective is as good as the real thing... I'd say 9:00.01, you'll get em next year
Jack Daniels' VDOT formula is usually pretty close. He has you at ~9:06 (9:09 for 3200m).

The calculator I use equates a 9:07 3200 with a 14:43 5k. So clearly, you have had some good improvement - keep on doing the same sort of training as what got you to where you are now, stay healthy. Your high school 3200 time will fade further into the past - your 5000 pace is already faster; soon it will be your 10k pace, then just a split on a tempo run. And that is how it goes, you just have to keep on going.

14:43 with 4:05 ~ 8:55 (3200, not 2-mile)
with 4:10 ~ 8:59
with 4:15 ~ 9:03
with 4:20 ~ 9:07
My son just ran 14:43 at the NBN HS meet. His 3200 PR this year was 9:04. Most of the answers above are also in the correct range within 5 seconds each way.

Normally I'd say it ending up as a tempo split would be pretty unheard of but a drop from 9:38 to 14:43 in one year shows you have massive upside. Stay healthy.
