Is that why he lived in a trailer park 'cause he was a junkie and needed to spend his rent money shootin' up?

Pre wasn't on drugs, but Lasse sure was. Lasse was doped so bad, he would make Giambi look like a novice.
It is highly unlikely both used drugs - except maybe canibus.
Blood packing maybe. Viren's advantage: altitude training and better athlete with better coaching. (Oh my god did he just say better coaching?) Yup.
what are you talking about??? He lived in a trailer park because running was what he spent most of his time doing. He didn't have a big time job or anything. He lived off foodstamps and got jack squat from the AAU...
If Pre was on drugs he would have taken the 200 grand offered him; he was as pure as any athlete could be. I find it very offensive that someone could even contemplate that. Pre actually medaled at Munich because all the evidence says Viren blood doped giving Pre at least a bronze; and I for one would like to see him have it.

So I take it all you guys followed Pre around every second of his career. You don't know what he did or didn't do so can it.
Drugs have been around for a while. 50 years ago it might have been speed (Vladimir Kuts?)
Steroids were starting to get popular right before Pre died.
Whose to say Pre didn't take the $200,000 so he could take on Viren another time and this time get equally prepared?
be in the know before you post about Steve. I knew Steve, and I can say for certain he was not on anything. Sorry, he was high on life and running, but nothing more than that. As for Lasse, it isnt much mystery that like the east german program, the finnish government gave them jobs to cover for training, but didnt expect them to work those jobs. Conveniently turned their backs so that the athletes could train while getting paid for jobs they werent doing, so they could win their country medals. which technically meant they were professionals. Lasse Viren was a police officer, if you can honestly believe that. As for Steve though, he was very clean. Thanks though.
Thanks for your post. Since you say you knew him your credibility stands stronger than the above posts and the former well known coach at Athletics West who once insinuated otherwise.
DUMB POST OF THE DAY
it has come down to the final 2, you decide........
1) Did Lance really have cancer?
2) Was Steve Pre on drugs?
Runners Rule new Pre? Then you knew about the kinky sex parties? You knew Pre alright? Pre was the first runner in Eugene on roids, it was no secret.
i am sure for the most people on this site HE WAS NOT!! VIREN WAS. but you ask the rest of world, they would say PREFONTAINE WAS, VIREN NOT!! THE TRUE IS ::: BOTH WERE!!!
-Just more alcohol and weed than anyone known to man.
PRE WOULD NOT TAKE 200K, AND WOULD RATHER LIVE IN A TRAILER?. ................."keep fooling yourself!!!" HE WAS FOR SURE ON SOMETHING!!
Herb was a lot cheaper then too, unless you grow your own of course.
I don't think Pre was a doper, doesn't even cross my mind. He was good in HS, not like he came out of nowhere...
Neither were on drugs. Opposite of today, when one can't find a World Ranked Ethiopian or Kenyan who doesn't jam a syringe full of EPO or Repoxygen into his arse regularly.
why do you people spout off without anything that constitutes factual information? It is a bad practice people. Steve lived in a trailer because professionals could not run in the Olympics. He liked a simple life, and he grew up in a simple town, both in Coos Bay and Eugene. You have to understand the mentality of alot of people that come from places like Eugene and Coos Bay. Money isnt their focus in life. I'm sorry but for many of you, your ignorance is oozing right now. I won't say anything more on the Finns, because even I have no proof as to whether Lasse Viren was a cheat. However as for Steve, he was clean on drugs. The guy didnt smoke weed, but he liked drinking good beer at a party, just like alot of people do. It is insulting to accuse him of wrongdoing when he did so much, and he fought for what many were too scared to fight for, in attacking the governing body that paid them, the AAU. Now please, stop this charade. It is easy to ignore the ignorant, but this is both insulting and atrociously rude when none of you knew the man, nor do you have even probable cause as to make such statements concerning drugs, cheating, etc. I hope it stops. Thanks.
very good point
steve killed the AAU, if he was on drugs they wouldnt take that from him, they would expose him.

define "good beer"... what "good beer" was there in simple Eugene in the early 70's? Face it, he drank shitty beer and thats why he is probably dead now.
Wasn't doping legal in Viren's day?

Only having read a handful of your posts, I've come to the conclusion that you're about 10 years old, 12 tops. If you're not idolizing a mythical character in a book, you're mythologizing an actual person and making it out that he had no flaws. Blood doping was not actually against the rules of the sport at that time, so Viren keeps his medal and Pre keeps his 4th place finish.
