Forecast in Eugene is calling for a huge heat wave this week during USA's with the heat peaking in the upper 90's on Saturday and Sunday.
How will 97* effect the men's 5000m run at 1:30 in the afternoon? How many people entered in the 10k will scratch from the 5?
How will the heat effect the top 3 finishers ? Does lagat have an advantage training in Tucson ? Ben true did pretty well in the heat in NY, will the northwest and west coast guys fall flat?
How slow will it go? +14:30?
Forecast is now calling for 99 on Saturday and 100 on Sunday. This is going to have a huge impact on the men's 5000m run at 1:30 in the afternoon on Sunday.
Will USATF move the 5k to the evening?
doubt it will be moved it would then be outside of the TV window

On Sunday at 1PM at the Home Depot Center (now the Stubhub Center) in Carson CA, the temperature is forecast to be 73 degrees and about the same at UCLA. Another reason why they should not have these things in Oregon.
could be somewhat similar to the 2010 champs in Iowa, where it was hot, but that was at 8 and the time was sub 14--maybe there was another champs where it was won in high 14 with a sub 4 minute last 1600?

It'll probably go out a bit slower with a fast finish and some people might not do as well as they'd like given the conditions. That's just how it goes sometimes.
Does anyone not remember the sub 4 finish between Rupp and Lagat last year??? What did Lagat have, like a 3:56?
Here's how we can save the distance and events we love but don't have the following:
I love the 10k and 5k but it doesn't need to be on TV. Run all distances at night in a distance carnival atmosphere. It's a nitch market. Then give TV the sprints and mid-d races.
I also think the world trials should have a marathon. Run in the stadium like the Olympics.
It's not that tough to race in heat if you have the common sense to train in heat too, which however almost nobody does. Even if the race weather turns out good, those who train in heat will have a big advantage. Blood volume goes way up to adapt to the diversion of blood to the skin to dissipate heat.
It will not be that hot at 1:30 either, not in June, peak temperature is at 4 or 5pm.
What about the junior men 10k and junior women's 3k at the hottest time of day, 5-6pm? Could those be moved too? No TV considerations. Does heat only matter for seniors?Thoughts?

Okay, I agree with you as much as this: Eugene is in the middle of nowhere in a city, err town, where there are about as many track fans as trees. Why not put it in a spacier place like LA? 'Cause Eugene is TRACKTOWN. I'm not sure anyone in LA would give up a perfectly sunny So. Cal day to see a dumb track meet. (normal people I mean).
Sorry, the part I agree with you about is the 73 degree weather thing. Also, I'd prefer if it if the city hosting USAs was a place you could actually convince your girlfriend that it can be a decent vacation.
They have moved both men and womens 5000 to sunday morning at 10 am.
Won't that kill attendance because people need to go to church?

I don't remember seeing that before.
I thought he collapsed after the race.
He crumbled to the ground right in the middle of the race - mid stride.
And Todd Williams was a very experienced and very good runner.
Nitches get stiches.
I like the claim by Michelle Tafoya that it was dehydration because they were spraying water on him. It had to be heat exhaustion (if not heat stroke).
