Former Adams state 400/800 runner. Has more of a speed background. PR of 1:48 before this year. Started training with Brenda Martinez and Big Bear track club. Now being coached by Carlos Handler. Kid is young, has tons of speed, Runs without fear, and seems to be adapting well to altitude. I think he is unsponsored too.
High school in colorado springs, CO
Went to adams state for a few years, won nationals freshman year but was academically inelligible for the rest
Somehow ended up in brenda martinezs group in big bear cali and has dropped to 1:43.
And I read he was working at McDonald's not to long ago. What a story. Haven't been this pumped on a mid distance runner in awhile. Someone get this guy a contract!
What did he run in HS? What was his best time his freshman year in college and what year was that?
Hs in Colorado springs, ran 11.3, 21.9, and 46.9 if I remember right. He ran 1730 in cross country as well. He's never been afraid to run from the front. His junior year he also won the 800 at state in 153 going out around 52 I think. Didn't have the grades for college running to work out for him.
This'll put to rest the notion that he has no shot at nationals. This guy dropped far, far too much time in that very early 1:45 to have been capped out this year. He may have more in the tank than even this, as this was another 2 second drop. No sign yet of levelling off but obviously any further drops start to put him high on the all-time American list.

He seems to be racing in New Balance gear, which makes sense since (as president of Big Bear TC) Martinez seems to have had some role in his recruitment there, and she is of course a New Balance athlete.
Surprised the LRC interview didn't ask what kind of support he's getting, if any. They often go there (which is good).
I've been following him through Brenda for the last year. He was dropping time trial bombs clear back in Feb.
He's 22. Freshman year (2012) he went 1:51 indoors and 1:48 outdoors and also won both D2 NCAA titles. He is the anti Drew Windle..... Or would've been the best 800m runner D2 had ever seen if his grades were more of a focus in his career.
Is this guy dumber than Ryan Hall? It's great that his talent has shone through.
Was Ryan Hall dumb?
If he isn't a jesus phreak, then he is smarter than Hall by a wide margin.

Colorado Springs: 6'000 ft
Adams State: 7'500 ft
Big Bear: 6'750
I wouldn't say he's responding well to altitude, I'd say he never left! The added strength work to his background of speed is why he's blossoming now.
Has he ever raced a 1000 or 1500? Not saying he should move up, just curious.
Seems like more of a speed man, looking at his college 21.97 and 47.34:

Should stick with the 800 a while before thinking of moving up.
Honestly Boris Berian had the biggest performance breakthrough for the US today. More than True. Much more than Wilson. This was a huge, huge, huge, huge race for him.
One Forty MF Three
His PR in HS was 1:52.18, now that's defnitely respectable, but holy crap, it's funny to see how many guys run that time compared to who make it this far. I'm pretty sure Symmonds was at 1:52 in hs also. And then there is my coach whos hs pr was 1:52, he only got close to breaking 1:50 in college, and now he's a high school science teacher.
Drew Windle was 1:53 in high school
... and seems to be adapting well to altitude.
Let's hope so. He was born, raised and has spent pretty much his entire life at high altitude.
