That was a treat to watch. WOWWWWW
I'm at the meet and it is disappointing that people are going to see the time and dismiss it. It is 90 in the stands in the shade, probably 100 degrees down on the track. Ben looked smooth and stayed patient the whole way. Beat Willis and Longsiwa in a sprint that I hadn't seen from him before. Outkicked Olympic medalists at 1500 AND 5000. The field wasn't deep, but had some scalps that Ben was able to take. The way he has been running, I would take him #1 in the US at 5k right now.

Ben True just won a Diamond League 5000m. Rupp hasn't even done that.
Awesome running! He moved to the lead, got passed, and came back on Willis
His kick two weeks ago uphill to beat out Sambu at Healthy Kidney certainly gave me faith watching today. He's a monster right now and not afraid to mix it up with the Africans.

You are correct. No American has ever won a DL 5000 - male or female so True made history.
Speaking of history, this also was the slowest DL winning time in history.
Jonthan Gault says the previous slowest DL winning time was 13:14 by Mo Farah in Birmingham in 2013.

At this point, True is the main threat for Rupp in the trials.
Such a good watch. Unlucky for Willis with his slight misjudgment of the timing of his kick there around the bend. It was amazing how easy he made it look to sprint straight past Longosiwa etc before True caught him on the home straight. Impressive stuff. Will be interesting to see what happens in Beijing if its a slower race like we saw here...

I disagree with much of your post.
1) How is it 'unlucky' to misjudge your kick?
2) I don't see how Willis has any shot at a medal in the 5000 in Beijing. Someone would drop him before the bell. At Worlds, they don't run the 5000 under the sun in the middle of the day. It's at 7:30 at night in a stadium - so lots of shade.

But it was faster than the Olympic 5000m. That heat looks awful.
bodes well for True at Trials and World's, but they will close the World 5000m in 53 or better with a similar time (probably cooler, though) and about the same in the 10000m.
Lol it was 78 degrees Fahrenheit and people were saying it was 100. Delusional
Excuse me using unlucky, you are right thats not quite the right word. Maybe unfortunate is a better fit.
Im not saying that it will be hot in Beijing as you said it will be run at night (I'm guessing in good temps?)
This obviously doesn't however rule out a 'slow' race, which as Willis said in the post race interview today suits him better (he turns to toast if they go at 800m to go). Most of us on here have seen our fair share of slow and/or tactical 5000m or 10000m and we all know this is more likely to occur in championship races (2012 London Olympics - 13:41 winning time for example) where athletes are running for medals not necessarily times.
I wasn't just thinking of Willis having a shot at a medal in the 5000m in Beijing as such. I was thinking more True as he seems to have a lot more distance strength than Willis.
Why in the world is the meet held in the middle of the afternoon, in mid-June? This is not the Pacific Northwest. It gets hot on the East coast on June afternoons - leading to high heat index or massive rainstorms (remember the weather when Lukas broke 4?)
Make this a night meet and you'll see more crowds in the stands - although I don't know what the transportation situation is like in Randall's Island at night.
My guess is NBC will only show the meet on the Saturday afternoon timeslot (when everyone is outside enjoying the weekend) - so the fans and athletes have to suffer through it.
Unheard of runner in college, comes from nowhere to run 13:11, then 13:02, now he's a DL champ. Give me a half hour, and I'll have a document that shows he was on testosterone in high school too.
