That just proves that Salazar has been perfecting his doping techniques for a long time. He also lied about it and told Mo Farah + UK Athletics that he wasn't her coach when she was caught.

This is a poorly researched article all-around. They are quoting John Cook, who claims he was close to Prefontaine, highly doubtful since Cook was an unknown high school coach in Virginia when Pre was alive.
Now Cook pops again with this idiotic comment:
"(Salazar) told me he was coaching her, so I guess now he's removing himself from that," said the American, who helped Salazar set up his Nike Oregon Project running stable.
"But he was certainly her coach. Mary had several coaches at (her US running team) Athletics West."
When asked to clarify that Salazar was one of those coaches, Cook said: "Absolutely, he takes credit for that."
HELLO, JOHN COOK. ATHLETICS WEST DISBANDED IN 1986. YOU ARE FULL OF SHITE!
HELLO, BBC, QUIT RELYING ON THIS IDIOT FOR INFORMATION. He DOESN'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT.
It's such a ridiculous lie--very strange they're digging their heels in so hard about it.
Especially since it's common knowledge he was her coach. So was he lying in every past report, and telling the truth to Farah? Or vice versa?
Either one is ridiculous and shows, at the very least, a thoughtless propensity for dissembling.

IF THEY WERE DISBANDED IN 1986, WHO WON THE USA CROSS COUNTRY TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 1989?

Let's assume that all that you're saying about Cook is true. Now take he quotes out of the article. Now we are left with numerous interviews with Salazar and Slaney saying that he was her coach. So please tell me how that amounts to a "poorly researched article all-around".
Just out of curiosity, what do you know of Cook's possible relationship with Pre? What evidence do you have that Cook is being untruthful? As far as Cook talking about Athletics West, you can also read his comment as saying "she had several coaches over the years in the program."
Athletics West was active until 1990 when is became Nike International. I'm not sure that you know what you're talking about but you just keep talking and deflecting and apologizing. It seems that your response is poorly researched.

You obviously didn't read the full article since you're only responding to Cook (who is corroborated, btw, in the rest of the evidence). Here are the other sources the BBC used:
* People Magazine, 1994 - Article saying Slaney had hired Alberto as her coach to prep for the Olympics
* New York Times, June 1996 - Article saying Alberto had been coaching Slaney for 2 years
* Runner's World, June 1996 - Photo of Salazar and Slaney running together, and an interview in which he's ID'd as her coach
*Worcester Telegraph & Gazette, June 19, 1996 - Interview with Salazar about coaching Slaney just TWO DAYS after the Olympic Trials
*St. Albans Messenger, January 1997 - Photo of Slaney and her coach Alberto Salazar AFTER she had tested positive
* Oregonian, 1997 - Quote from Salazar as her coach AFTER she had tested positive
And then there's Alberto's biography where he brags about coaching Slaney himself.
BOTTOM LINE: ALBERTO LIED.

Agreed. With all the stuff that has been going on with NOP the last decade, this ridiculous lie to Farah should be the least of everyone's concern.

McFly, you're back. Everyone knows that AW existed in a different form after 1986 when they closed shop in Eugene, It went from a centralized club in Eugene, with close to 50 members, most of them aspiring national class runners, to a much smaller National club comprised of mostly world-class athletes.
Try to keep up.
That part is true. Any knowledgeable track fan knows it. It's John Cook's part that is unreliable. A self-proclaimed "close friend of Pre", he says Mary was being coached by many people at AW, when AW closed 10 years earlier? yeah yeah yeah.
Mary was coached by Dick Brown in the early 80s, switched to Bill Dellinger after AW closed down, then went with Alberto in 1994. Any questions?

If all the rest is true, then who cares what John Cook said? Alberto coached Slaney when she tested positive for doping, period.
He then lied and claimed he wasn't her coach to Farah, UK Athletics, and the press when they came asking about his history with doping. That's the story here. And it casts a shadow over Alberto's more recent pleas of innocence when he stoops to lying about something as well documented as coaching Slaney.

Then why did you try to dismiss it above by saying "This is a poorly researched article all-around."???
You NOP fanboys are a strange lot...
I suspect this lie originates with Farah, not AlSal. Or at least post-dates Farah joining NOP. I doubt that he asked about the relationship with Slaney until people in the press starting talking about the issue. Does anyone know the earliest claim from Farah that he asked Alberto about it and was told he wasn't her coach when she tested positive?British press doing what they do best--building up the suspicion against AlSal, making him seem dodgy, while carefully repeating there are no allegations against Farah. If anything dodgy comes up in Farah's blood record or anywhere else, watch them shred him mercilessly.

The NOP fans boys have been using the "Pre was famous and in Oregon. Cook was an unknown in Virigina," on several posts to claim there was no way Cook knew Pre, therefore Cook is a liar. Watch and look for the Pre-Cook comment and you'll see several different NOP fanboys nics mentioning it. Basically, there is only one actual poster defending the NOP that way--likely an intern working for NOP.

I'm far, far away from being a fanboy. I'm just debunking John Cook's part of it. I makes me wonder if the rest of his testimony is true or not.
Farah said he got assurances about Slaney from Alberto in the presser before Birmingham.
Ever since then, Alberto has been trying to distance himself away from Slaney

Then instead of saying "This is a poorly researched article all-around."
You should say "95% of this article is correct. The place where they quote John Cook is wrong."

Never worked for NOP. Worked for Nike a long time ago. Have no allegiance to either. I think that NOP is dirty. I think that John Cook is a bullshite artist. How's that?

That's 100% fair. Sorry for the confusion. We don't get to edit our posts after we push the send button.
