What is it about the 7 minute barrier. It seems no matter how fast or how slow you are, the bulk of the running (training) is guaged or around the 7 minute barrier. I mean world class guys do tons of mileage at this speed and your 22 minute 5k guys run mostly around 7 minute miles. I am a 16 minute type and I base lots of miles off of 7 minutes (easy and long stuff of course).
sorry dude, but I very, very much doubt that ANY world class guys over ANY distance, run their distance at that speed.
Why? - well, what good is that to marathon runners who are running 42.1km at 3min/km pace, and also to 5000m and 10000m runners, who are looking at sub 13, and sub 27min20 pace. It isnt.
I would suggest you are looking at 6 minute miles MINIMUM.

What are you saying tostitosfiestabowl? Are you saying that on account of wejo not having his watch you planned to go at 6:30 pace but ended up doing 7:15 pace when all was said and done? If that is what you are saying--that is very interesting. I remember a much faster team mate of mine asking how I ran a 7 mile run--I was nervous cause I couldn't remember so I blurted out 49 minutes and the accurate seconds, which I could remember. It was so much slower than what he had run that I expected to get derided. Just the opposite happened though to my relief. But later on I was able to recall how fast I had ran the 7 miles and it was just under an hour--over 8 minute average. I think this team mate would have rode me if I told him the truth since it was over magic 7. Fact is, I was dogging the workout and I didn't want my teammates to know it.
What the hell are you guys on? 7 minute miles! If anyone here ran in college, you should be used to running 6 minute miles for say 7 to 10 miles.
7-11, I suggest you browse the web to see what elite mid-distance and distance runners do for there average non-tempo run. These guys are probably doing them at 5:00 or so.
For me I am training for the mile, running post-college, and am 24 years old...a run of 6-8 miles at 6:00-6:15 is quick, 6:30 medium , 6:45-7:00 recovery/easy. I do tempo runs at say 5:30-5:45, for 3 to 5 miles. I average 30-50 miles a week.
I have a PR 4:23 for the mile, i was a 27:10 8k XC guy in college.
Well, I ran 3:42 and probably did the bulk of my mileage near 7 minute pace. Warm ups and warm downs were 7 min pace. My Sunday 9-10 mile run was run mostly at 7 minute pace and most of the easy runs had some 7 minute miles. The slower guys that ran with me ran at the same pace. So I get the idea of this thread. The tempo runs, hill workouts and intervals were done at a completely different level. Tempo runs were run at about 5:30 and mile repeats went from 4:40 to 4:20. Incidentally, I ran with 3:35 guys along with guys that had trouble breaking 30 minutes for 5 miles and we all warmed up at 7 minute pace.

that you are doing only 30-50 miles/week is a joke. It seems that you lack in endurance- my 5mile time is 26:47, about ½ a minute better than yours, but you have 14 seconds on me in the mile.... You have potential to bring that 5 mile time WAY down, at least by a minute. You should re-evaluate your whole training program. If your training for the mile, I would suggest that you get in as many miles as you can handle during your base-I would guess 80/week at the minimum. And believe me you would not handle 6 minute pace at 80 miles/week very well- and if you did you would soon find yourself sick or injured.
You would learn that 7:00/mile is indeed a respectable pace to run at, especially when your doing 80+ miles/week.
I think Scooter and Runna understood what I was saying. Yes, I undestand that fast runners (from milers to marathoners) do lots of faster running.......however there are a lot of 7 minute miles thrown into the mix. What elese makes it so interesting is that a much slower guy can do a good bit of training with much better runners........ easy, long, or recovery days of course.
I think it would have been useful to carry a Palm Pilot to decifer Cook's GS pedastal, baatan, waterloo programs. Drills a & b were very similar and I never mastered all of the dynamic stretches. Achon had it down though. Don't ask me how this relates to 7 minute pace.
A lot of younger guys don't understand what recovery is, while a lot of older wiser runners know exactly what recovery is. That's the reason you have slower inexperienced runners and faster elite runners doing a training pace around 7:00. Runners become better runners mostly through mileage and hard workouts. Recovery runs are simply that...recovery.

Over half of my mileage is over 7 minute pace. Sometimes I approach 8 minutes. I'm just trying to let the legs recover while getting some aerobic benefit.
wow scott s., if you only ran 27:10 8k you have no room to talk about training. You training obviously didnt work out.
I didn't run in college, rarely go under the 7 minute barrier, rarely run less than 8 miles, can run a 27:10 10k, and don't do workouts.
Your workout routine should be posted if you're running 27:10 for a 10k.
to those who are claiming 6 minutes per mile is the barrier for the elites, talk to craig mottram. he runs his recoveries between 6:20-30 - and he's a SUB 13 5Ker. Who can say that on this board? the way i look at it, if a sub 13 5k runner is running recovery at 6:20-30, 7 minutes should be good for me considering i'm not even a sub 14 5ker.
i run most days around 6:45ish, mileage in the 80s-90s. current 8k pr of 24:48 - and that was off 70 miles a week.
