For someone who runs a 39:10 10k what would you assume their 5k time to be?

18:40-18:50. Depends on difficulty of the 10k.
if you're perfectly trained for both, with tons of running experience, all that good stuff, than i would say that 39:10 is equal to 18:30-18:35. however, most people are undertrained as the distances go up, so i'll guess that you could run 18:20-18:30.
bumbojumbo is right (if perfectly trained for both). Reed is way off.
Double your 5k and add 1:30.
18:53 per Daniels, which I've always found to be very accurate for me.
Based on average miles per week for the last 12 months:
Less than 20 - 18:00
20-30 - 18:30
30-40 - 18:45
40+ - 18:53
Doubling your time in a race of distance X and adding 10 percent works very well for most people in predicting a time over distance 2X, and applies from 5K/10K all the way up to half-marathon/marathon. So 18:40 sounds right. But shoot for 18.38.3 instead, so you can officially crack 6:00 pace.
