I actually thought he spoke and handled himself very well, just funny how often he snuck "ya know" in there.

Take a step back and think how lucky it would be to be interviewed for accomplishing such an amazing time. If you were to be so lucky you would probably wet your pants and babble on while picking your nose.
You made me think it would be painfully awkward. He actually came across quite well, and while he did say "y'know" a lot, it's clearly just an interjection used in his way of speaking, the way some young people use "like".
