A general inquiry about what kids like Rupp, Ritz, Hall, Solinsky, Teg. ate during their formative years. Do you think their diet was pretty clean? F/V's, protein etc. Or did they fuel with soda, sugar and fats more than we think? Not a judgement, just curious to find out what impact, if any, it has on athlete development.
My guess is with many of the elites (most from N. Midwest or West Coast) they ate mostly clean protein. Chicken, Fish etc. With a moderate amount of grains.
Not as much fat or sugar as kids eat in the Northeast.
Not an expert. Just thinking out loud.
They would have consumed a high amount of grains. Where do you suppose they got the glycogen and sheer energy for their intense training volumes and occasional insane workouts?
On Flotrack track cribs Galen rupp's Oregon pad had tons of soda.
Chris Solinsky was known for having a taste for cheese pizza and ice cream on occasion. I imagine the hearty Midwesterners teg, Solinsky and the Catholic Rupp would have eaten red meat rather regularly. At least 1-2 a week. For sweets, I imagine some had some in the carb department (eg baked goods). Ritz always seemed like a guy who had his vegetables on the dinner plate. Teg too but a lil less so. I think teg and Solinsky became more organized eaters with age especially after turning pro and getting married. I think rupp too since having a girlfriend and getting married post college. Remember hall and the muscle milk pancakes? I have to believe in high school then he ate tons if carbs including sweets and flour products.
Eating lots of red meat wouldn't hurt their athletic careers but would increase their risk of degenerative disease in their late 30s and 40s, owing to damaged circulatory vessels.
