The front page has an article which refers to the 5000m field at Pre as being "absolutely stacked." Yeah, if they all ran their pbs, it would indeed be a stacked field. But NONE of them are close to pb shape, and Galen and Lagat will NEVER break 13 again, which of course is not going out on a limb since the 40 year old Lagat has NO CHANCE to ever break 13 again, and the 29 year old Rupp has even less than NO CHANCE, if that were mathematically possible. Rupp was able to dip under 13 ONCE in his absolute prime, so of course he cannot do it now that he is on the decline. Alamirew is talented, but he is not in shape yet, and guys like Soi, Rop and Koech will never run as fast as their pbs again, so it is likely that Pre is won in 12:59 with maybe two others under 13:05, with Lalang in the mix. It is actually a weak field, but of course the hype drums up more interest.
"Absolutely Stacked" Pre 5000m is Incredibly Weak

The prefontaine classic is more of a pageant than a track meet. Nike will parade all those big names in front of the geriatric fans, show it on NBC tv, and all the kiddies will think track is a big deal in America and buy a pair of Zoom spikes.
I have always got the impression that the top athletes don't give a shit how they perform there, and that those who do go all out are under some kind of contractual duress. Who wants to peak too early and ruin their chances in August? -
Wait. You are saying the field is weak because you project that they will not run PRs?
So how could it be stronger then? Different athletes with slower PRs that you think are in better shape?
Not sure why you are on Rupp's case about sub 13.
Did you know that only two races the entire year last year produced a sub 13 time?
And Rupp beat almost everyone in the 5000 at some point last year because he was consistent.
I am not sure that you understand the sport. -

The field is weak because Mo is not in it.
I don't mind that Nike wants to give Galen a rust buster but don't try to make it something it is not. -
I would say it's somewhere in the middle of absolutely stacked and weak. With that much talent assembled, at least one of the guys will be in decent form (decent form not necessarily meaning a fast time). I would've liked to see Gebriwhet or Ndiku or Edris in there.
-
No Farah, Ndiku, Edris, Gebriwhet among others. So I would agree that it is not "Absolutely Stacked". It is very possible that nobody in this race gets a medal at worlds.
However I think they are running it Friday Night this year so the time could be faster than usual. And the race does feature 3 of the Americans with a good chance of making the 5k world's team in Rupp, Lagat, and Hill. -
"Alamirew is talented"
He's an Olympic Silver Medalist, he's a lot more than talented. -

Please post a reputable link to Rupp's 5K PR from last season.
Thanks!

I'll keep an eye out for:
Juan Luis Barrios: He is one second away from breaking Arturo Barrios' Mexican 5k record, set in 1989, almost 25 years ago.
Mohammed Ahmed: Less than 5-seconds off the Canadian 5k record set in 1998 by Jeff Schiebler.
Other then these two, expect a sit-and-kick fest, with the winning time in low 13. And, which of the African runners was paid to be a personal draft horse for Rupp. -
"I am not sure that you understand the sport"
POY - that goes for about 90% of the people who post here. LOL -

Even if you playing with semantics, you are a fvcking idiot. Either you are dumb because you have no idea what PR the OP meant, or you are dumb for splitting hairs, as he never said it was a 5k PR. -
Fool, Morun, Idjiot, Dolt ... Imbecile ... learn to read ... learn to understand.
1. Rupp was able to dip under 13 ONCE...
2. He just ran a PR last season.
Conclusion. Under 13 means THE 5k. PR means Rupp ran sub 13 again to beat his PR. Therefore, when in the last season did this 5k PR occur? -
I love the USA but I would love to see Lawi Lalang win this one. He was exciting to watch at Arizona and I like what he is doing on the roads.
-
Rupp ran 26:44 last season, an American record in the 10000. If he is on he will break 13 at Pre, provided it's not a sit and kick fest which it may well be.

I am absolutely not the one who needs to learn to understand. The exact words from the poster you addressed are above. "How do you know he is on the decline? He just ran a PR last season." Where in those words does it say 5k PR? You are the imbecile that assumed this was in reference to the 5k. Learn a damn thing about running and explain to all of us how someone is considered on the decline less than 12 months after running the fastest 10,000 meter race of their life.
God, the inability to infer and then insult someone for not inferring is infuriating. -
Last season was indoors. He ran no PR

I agree. Pre's advertisement is correct. It is a stacked field and their current state of fitness is irrelevant. -
