If I've been running all 3 seasons and pretty much have not had a break except for 5 days over Xmas, how much time should I take off between spring and summer? I have one coach that says 10 days and another than says no time off. I feel like I need a need break. I'm just wondering how much would be too much time off. I'm going into my junior yr btw.
I'm taking 10 days completely off from running (obviously other activities like biking/frisbee/etc) then a few days super easy before I start getting my mileage up.
No time off but a couple weeks easy no more than 20 miles with strides 2 or 3 days a week.
7 days off then 4 days over the next 7 of just 20-30 minutes easy with strides
We take three weeks off. You need the rest if you want to peak right.
So far I've taken three days off following freshman track season, and I'm f*cking done with this sh*t. Sure, it's nice to be able to eat unhealthy stuff and relax for awhile, but it doesn't feel right after a couple days. My advice: take as much time off as you want, because eventually you won't enjoy it anymore.
I suggest two weeks. No running, but feel free to do other stuff for fun -- ride a bike, shoot some hoops, whatever. Don't worry about fitness - the rest will do you far more good than anything else. (I also take a week off before indoor season, and again before outdoor season.)
P.S. the coach who says NO time off is an idiot who shouldn't be coaching.
take off 7 days with nothing (no lifting/running) then feel free to lift/do core etc. for the last 3 days of your break, but still with no running.
How long is your summer break? It wouldn't hurt to take ~3 weeks "off", where you just do whatever activities you wish; hiking, swimming, cycling, rock climbing, whatever. Just stay active, but recharge both physically and mentally. If you summer is really short, you could take 10 days to 2 weeks "off".
When you start your summer training, the focus on "base"-oriented work will be "easier", and your physical recharge will continue a bit.
You sure sound like a "track noob". Three days off and you can't stand it? Do yourself a favor: stop giving advice until YOU know what you're talking about. I can almost guarantee that you won't hit any of your XC goals.
