I am a distance runner with decent leg speed. On a few occasions I have split 51.x secs for the 4x400m relay lead leg and rarely would ever run slower than 53.x secs. My 5 mile XC pr is low 26 mins.
However, whenever I'm in a middle distance or distance race it seems like I constantly get outkicked by anyone that's around me. I've been burnt by runners that can't break a 55 second quarter. I can remember being outkicked by racers with less raw speed for every distance from 800m to 5000m... and it bugs the crap out of me!
Any ideas why this happens? Seems it happened to me during almost every race I've ever run. Is it possible to exhaust the energy for a kick during the earlier stages of a race? Maybe I just don't know how to find my kick or maybe it indicates a lack of real strength.
