I'm trying to start a heart-rate based training program, and the protocol calls for the athlete to determine his maximum heart rate to base slower training paces off of that.
What would be the most accurate running test someone could use that would likely see them hit max heart rate somewhere in the run? Is it best to use a one-off test or several successive reps?
I was also wondering if any kind of non-running test (e.g., climbing uphill on a bike for a certain time) would give a good estimate, maybe even a better one than running. I've had an injury recently and don't want to aggravate it with uphill sprints, all-out time trials in spikes, etc.
