So this happened today... Does anyone believe that he has a chance at running under 4 minutes for the full mile this year? He was pushed the full distance in both races so it wasn't a solo effort. I honestly could see him running under 4:00 this year, if he chooses to run a 2 mile it appears that he could possibly run under 8:40.

A 4:05 mile is very good, but not close to breaking 4 minutes.

Just because Hunter is a great distance runner won't mean anything in the discus. I would predict that if he trained specifically for it, he could throw maybe 40.0m / 131-3. That is not even Regional class and I think he should stick with his promising events of the 800/1600/3200.

If the conditions are right and he's chasing Grant Fisher, who is on a sub-4 pace, I would not put it past him.
I'd give him a 20% chance.

Hunter is a marvelous runner, 4:07 at Penn off slower fractions
4:03 1600 is further away from sub four than some folks can imagine.
Also just Pr'ed at 1:52.98, but most sub 4's can run one of two things,. sub 1:50 or split , or sub 8:40 for two miles.
There is a reason this is hard to do. Plus he is only a junior. And he is certainly not old. Not in today's world.
Sub 8:40 is a realistic goal for Drew this season if he can get in a good race. It would be nice to see Grant Fisher and Drew Hunter in a 2 mile somewhere.
Yes he is quite the talent and his father is quite the coach. I understand I am quite naive on the difficulty of breaking four minutes, hence why I am asking for the opinions of others. Seeing that he does not have the best 400 speed out of the top HS milers, chances do seem much higher next year.
He was able to kick a 57 high last lap in this race so my idea was he was in good enough shape to be able to pull out that kind of speed at something this fast must mean he is in better shape if he was put in a time trial. I do understand racing and time trialing are two completely different things, but seeing as Fisher has really gone out pretty even for his miles this year, I am using the assumption that he would take this dream mile out which it appears he so badly wants to break 4:00 at in even splits.
To go with that, there are a several other guys with Fisher in their sights so hypothetically it appears that there will be quite a challenge.
If Hunter runs within 2 seconds of 8:40 this weekend (he is running the 3200 at the Southern Track Classisc) at his 3200 do you see him breaking 4:00 this season?
I think he could, given the right race, good conditions, etc. His speed seems to be improving, as well as his mechanics when running fast, and combine that with his great strength, who knows what he could do! He split a 51 a few weeks ago in a 4x400, too.
within 2 seconds of 8:40 is an 8:42 3200 or 8:45.xx two mile. Guys have run that or faster and never touched four minutes, so no, I do not think it indicates 4 minutes at all.
In fact Hunter's time is closer to 4:05 converted than 4:04 even. I do not think people realize how far away that really is, because it seems like a small gap.
The last 5 seconds are quite a bit different than going from 4:10 to 4:05, obviously not in time increment, but there are quite a few guys who have run :4:05.x or better. Very few under 4 flat.
If he ran or could 8:35 or better for two miles, I would say he may not need the 1:50 or better on the low end.
I think German could have run under 4 minutes the weekend of his historic California State meet double,or at Outdoor HS Nats if he had pacing.
I agree 4-5 seconds is not an easy drop at this level. However, having watched this kid run many times, I would not count him out. If not this year, next. Winning is more important to him than times, though he is a good time trial-er out of necessity. Also, he has not had the opportunity to run against collegians and pros like Fisher and Maton have this season. He has to do most of the work up front. His top end speed is not equal to Fisher and Maton but he seems to outkick the speedsters he races against pretty handily.

His father was an All American XC runner . Cleveland State I believe

His dad ran his high school times on about 20 miles per week. Added some mileage in college and took off, but injuries finished him. His mom was mediocre 800 meter runner, 2:11?. His mom writes the training for him and the rest of the Loudoun Valley distance kids.
Drew ran 8:53.81 for 2 miles last year.
I think he could run sub 8:40 this year for 2 miles if that was his highest goal.
The question is does he want to compete with Fisher et al in the mile and most likely lose but approach 4:00 or put up a sub 8:40?
He ran 8:48 for 2 miles indoors this year. Pretty sure he'd like to try for both the mile and the 2 mile. Finding the meets to do so is the issue. Having Brooks PR and NBON the same weekend dilutes the talent. And he hasn't even been invited to the Dream Mile. If he got invited to that, both a good mile and a good 2 mile might be possible.
