Was actually a middle school record (6th - 8th grade). Happened last May. Kid ran 4:39. My mark, set in 87, was 4:40. I know I should say good for him and that I don't care, but damn, that was the highlight of my running career.
Insult to injury - I think he was a 7th grader.
Word has it the little douchebag was seen in Mexico. It ain't official until he's tested.
If he's a 7th grader he didn't break your 8th grade record at least right? Maybe that punk will get injured next year.

Did the track have a curb? Watching my kid's HS meets, there is no curb on the track and so many of the runners are stepping inside of lane 1 routinely, and there is no official watching.
Although the above is true, of course I'm just kidding. LIke the other guy said, you have the 8th grade record. And you can say, "I set a record that stood for 28 years." Isn't that longer than Beamon's LJ record survived?
My daughter has two MS mid/long distance records and we are thrilled they have lasted just a few years- so 28 years is impressive.
And maybe this kid will become elite- and then you can say that it took somebody as great as this to break your record.

I like this technical defense - but it was actually a county-wide middle school record open to 6th-8th grades. I also imagine he will break his own record this year. All I can do is tip my hat . . . or figure a way to hack into the record data base and erase the mark :-)
Tell people you ran the full mile, not this 1600 crap. Maybe they'll believe it.
Thanks for the kind words. It was my 1st year of competitive running and I fell in love with the mile from the crack of the gun. A relationship that still exists. In fact, I went sub 4:40 last track season with the motivating theme . . . "just run faster than you did as an 8th grader."
I have two records that will never be broken. Xc 2.5 miles and 2 mile on the track. Xc is now 5k and track is 3,200.
While my converted 2 mile has been obliterated (held for 20 years), nobody has gotten close to splitting my 2.5 mile xc time. That was from 1981.
The times weren't really fast but it's a small school.
We had a freshman last year take down the converted 800 from 1977. He ran in the 1:54s.
My brother thinks he may still have our jr high record in the 1,320.
I find it hard to believe that you ran a 1600 in eighth grade in 1987, when most of the tracks, especially on the middle school level, were 440y. 4:39-40 is cruising for a 7th or even 8th grader. I could manage only a lackluster 5:32 those years on my 5-10 mpw (I assume).
It was a 1600, not a mile. All weather track in the mid-west. Not sure when they made the switch to 400/800/1600, but it was before 87 because I also ran the 800 and 1600 relay (not the 880 and mile relay). Wish I could say it was a full mile; then I would have a legit argument that I still had the record.
My junior high school high jump record (not at all high) and my high school two-mile record (not all that fast) were both broken long ago. It is fleeting. I think the only record I still hold is the 30-39 age group best at a 3-mmile road race. The 40-49 record is faster.
I ran 4:53 in 8th grade and I thought that was fast.

Not hard to believe. Our track, and most nearby schools (except one or two)where we competed, were also 400m by 1987. Our high school was a small school (less than 500 students) in Indiana.
Junior high (6-8th grade) competed on the high school track, since it was the only track. Same at most schools in our conference.
I ran a 4:56 senior year and thought it was fast.
He also broke your 2400m record.
Bill Matthews when he was back in Bama ran something like 4:25 or 4:26 in 8th grade..ran something close to 9:40 in the deuce also. Being Crimson tide fans we all hope he'd stay in Bama.
I set the school record for the mile in 8th and 9th grades in the late 70s. My times were 5:28 and 5:09. Yes, I'm a guy, buy the school closed permanently before anybody broke them so they'll never be broken! My daughter later set her school records in the 1600 that were faster than those!

Pretty strong for a junior high schooler. I think I ran 6 flat in 8th grade since my experience was nil and training was limited to running the actual race. freshman year most people's times dip considerably of course since they're actually training, and I think I went down to 4:55 that year. So I'd hold my head pretty high given the record lasted that long.
Hell, my HS school record was 4:35.
I had a particular HS meet record (4:26.9 1600 converted from 4:28.5 mile) from 1980 that stood for 34 years until it was broken last spring. It was odd to have still had the record for all that time since there have been plenty of sub 4:20 milers come through the HS ranks throughout the intervening years, and that particular meet has been held uninterrupted for the whole length of time.
