Mohamed Marhoum was absent at the cross country worlds in China in March. The story was that he was sick with the flu, in reality he'd tested positive for EPO in an out-of-competition test.

Another cheater in Spanish athletics... I wonder why they think we are al dopes...Why don't they stick to cocaine this drugadicts, and leave our sport!!! :
As long as the Spanish Athletics Federation keeps defending and suporting Marta Dominguez it's hard to not think Spanish athletics = doping.

It is a very unfortunate story about that guy.
This is a guy who was essentially abandoned by his parents as a kid, and he used to transport goods between Morocco and Ceuta (a Spanish territory located in North Africa, located between Morocco and Algeria) as a 9 year old boy! This means that this guy was essentially a street kid. He finally succeeded in staying in a shelter in Ceuta, and it was there that his talent as an athlete was discovered.
After moving to Spanish mainland, he joined a club and made steady progress in the years which followed.
As we know it, every club in Spain has a doctor affiliated to the club, and it is often those doctors who covertly administer advantageous products to their athletes. Some of those of those products are indeed perfectly legal, and others not.
I firmly believe that Mohamed Marhoum is a victim of his own success and circumstances beyond his control. This is a very unfortunate case, and the real guilty parties are those people in the clubs who are involved with this.
Ghost in China
I ran with a Spaniard attending college in the States a few years ago and he always said that in Spain all of the elites were doping, and doing so quite openly (toward other athletes they trained with). They'd even set alarms at night to get them up and moving so that they wouldn't die of a heart attack from the thick blood that the epo was giving them. Nothing I've seen in the news would suggest that he was exaggerating.
With the Spanish "tradition" and availability of doping, I wonder about the current "superman" of mountain running, Jornet. The financial incentive is there, and I suspect that ultras are not as tested overall (as in biopassport).
Do you just go around to all of the threads about dopers and post a sob story about how it wasn't their fault and it didn't help them improve?

Uh uh. Poor little Muslim African kid exploited by rich evil white Christian men.
What kind of money is available to an ultramarathon runner?
In his case, LOTS. He is a celebrity in Europe, relatively speaking.

I don't deny that what he did was wrong, but Marhoum has indeed been exploited for his talents as a runner in Spain. We saw a similar situation with Bezebah, the former Ethiopian who used to beat Mo Farah in the Euro cross.
Marhoum only has marginal literacy and he can barely read, and has had very little schooling. Someone like that is very easy to control.
What I am suggesting is that there are attenuating circumstances to his case, and a good dose of compassion would be welcome.
Not all infractions are committed under the same conditions, no one can even prove that he willingly took products to gain an edge on the competition. Most of these Maghribians just follow orders from their coaches.
Ghost in China
Pfffft. Victim beyond his control? Are we supposed to feel sorry for the cheater because of his childhood? He's a cheater. Period. Think it's a big coincidence that makhloufi was mia in 2013? Cheater. Think Benabbad is really having surgery? Cheater. Boulami's steeple out of this world? Cheater. Ramzi's miraculous kick? Cheater. El Gerrouj's training mates busted for drugs? Cheater. Khannouchi falls off the face of the earth? Cheater. Aouita trying to push drugs on the Australian team as coach? Cheater. I'm so sick of this.
"Tests" are being devised, and soon it will be illegal to be healthy.
"no one can even prove that he willingly took products to gain an edge on the competition."
-there are some extremely clueless fools here on letsrun. I'd say you're the king.
Save it for the clean athlete

Yes, let's be compassionate about those poor dopers.
