Well, the fact is, he IS NOT a runner, he is a biker. So, that's like saying "what if Bob Kennedy was a biker"? What is the point because Bob Kennedy IS NOT a biker. If Lance was a runner, the only sure thing I know is that he would not be a mega-millionaire like he is now, and he would not be going to Hollywood premieres and dating a rock star.
Know what I'm saying?
Are you a moron or what. With his heart and long power the Ethopians probably would have been trying to learn his program.
He probably has the explosiveness to run a decent 50m, but beyond that I'd say he wouldn't be anything special.
You think he could run a good marathon?
Who would win in a duathlon, Lance Armstong or Alan Webb?
I'm goin with Lance.
Lance is a mutant, aerobically. He's also incredibly focused. In a year he'd be running around 2:12. No doubt. Raced him on the bike in the early 90s (before he was really good) and I've never seen anything like it.
Someone somewhere on here posted that Armstrong used to do tri's and was only around 38 for 10K.
I think had he started as a runner (DIdn't build up non-running muscles) He would've been world-class. Look at his time-trialing skills...I would think they would translate well to distance running.
I heard somewhere that he ran sub 15 for a 5k in some triathlon (and won). And that was probably very comfortable for him. I also read once that his V02 max is the equivalent of a 2:06 marathoner, although I don't know how meaningful that is.
Lance's VO2 max is 83. The only one to record higher is Prefontaine.
Lance can't make the transition to elite runner b/c he'd get stress related injuries. Think about it, he pounds his legs on the bike, he probably does while running.

I'd like to point out that the first statement here is simply UNTRUE, and while the second statement (Lance would develop stress injury) is a valid conjecture, the supporting and final sentence doesn't seem to make any sense ("he pounds his legs on the bike, he probably does while running." (?)).
so wat do we think prefontaines vo2 was? in sports science this year we were told the highest vo2 recorded was like 94kg/ml/min for a man.
Hell, that's BS. Silvio Guerra has a VO2 Max of 88.
RE: If Lance was a runner how fast would he be?
If Lance "were" a runner....
When speaking hypothetically, use were instead of was. Thank you in advance for cleaning up your grammar.
I've read both of Lance's books. In one of them he talks about how he use to be a triathalete. When he was 16, he was consistently coming in the top 5 among some heavy hitters so they gave him the nickname "Junior."
I also read in runners world that Lance's coach claims that he could run something like 2:10. I think that's assuming of course that he trained for running rather than biking.
Reguardless, Lance is ridiculous.
Pg 50-53 of the July 2004 Runner's World
"...Armstrong jackhammered oxygen into his legs at the astonishing rate of 83 millimeters per kilogram per minute.
This figure wouldn't mean much if it weren't for the pioneering research of famed running coach Jack Daniels..."
Daniels says in one of his books that Prefontaine has the highest VO2 max ever recorded, 84. Daniels goes on to say that he is suspect of recordings higher than 85.
88 and 94 are extremely unlikely. If they are true, those are the two biggest underachievers in history.
Kodiak-
If my first premise is false where is your evidence to disprove it? My second premise "he pounds his legs on the bike, he probably does while running" is supported again by the Runner's World article (p.53). "Bicyclists tend to have bigger legs are run more stiffly." Whereas runners have a light stride and quick turnover cyclists tend to "thump" the road with the well-developed leg muscles.
I think and you agreed that this would increase their chances of stress related injuries.
I think Lance could run a 2:30 marathon.
I believe the now deceased climber Alex Lowe was well into the 80's for VO2 Max as well. I believe Ed Viesters (sp) (climbed Everest without O2) was right up there as well.
Where was it that Armstrong was quoted as saying he'd like to run a 5 minute mile someday? Anyone have the quote?
