So I was talking to my teammates yesterday at a meet and we were getting warmed up for our various events when one of them says "It'd be cool to run XC for Oklahoma State or somewhere like that." We all agreed, except one. He said that would suck. I asked him why and he says to me, I swear to god he says to me, "I wouldn't want to run 50 miles a week. That's a bunch of mileage and it probably wouldn't be fun." I looked at him in shock. I said that it's more like 80 miles a week most likely, and that I, a freshman in high school, run in the 40 mile a week range. He told me that I was stupid and that running that much mileage would kill my speed. He then says he puts in maybe 10 miles a week, and is proud of that. What. the. hell. He is an 800m runner who runs 10 miles a week. He thinks more than that would kill his speed. He manages to run 2:12 with that much mileage, and I think it is a shame that he will never reach his potential. Even XC he only ran 30-ish and thought that was a lot. After we debated the whole mileage thing, I said ask any distance runner here what their mileage is and it will probably be between 35-50mpw. He told me that the only guys who run that much are probably Footlocker qualifiers. I am dumbfounded. LRC, how much mileage did you/do you run in high school? Coaches, what do your kids run in a week? Is this low a mileage for HSers common?
