That's gonna be a tricky one. Yessir, a real puzzler.
Maregu Zewdie - you probably never heard of this 13:06 guy
Fred Carley from Niceville, Florida. 9:12 2miler as a freshmen (2nd fastest time ever at that point for a freshmen) from 1980 I believe. Held numerous 12-15 yr old age group records (4:44 mile in 6th grd, 10:02 2mile in 6th grd). Ran a 4:36 mile at Florida Relays his 8th grd year and later on doubled at a meet running 4:30 and 9:41 2mile. Without a doubt the best runner no one has ever heard of outside of Panhandle Florida.
And just to make this an official Letsrun post I'll incorporate Jeff Galloway. This young stud in '76 came in 2nd to Jeff Galloway at a local midnight run. The kid was 13 and dropped a 15:11 3mile road race!
Cynthia Dinghoffer.
Charlie Koester..Used to compete against Ron Hill and others on a bitch of a course..the old Maryland marathon with horribly tough hills..was Dave Patricks high school pal at Kenwood H.S..
I don't know
Harrison - 5
Wyatt - 2
Jett - 3 weeks
My three sons.
I'm pretty sure at least one of them will be great.

Here is a guy not many rememeber. His name was Bob Goss from Chelsea,Mass. Ran a 4:24 mile as a freshman in HS. Went on to be a 2 time State XC and 3 time Mile Champion. Ran a 4:14 indoors his SR year on 160yd indoor track back in 1978. By the way he only trained about 35 mpw in HS. Amazing talent. Bob got a scholership to Univ. of Texas El Passo and in his Freshman year ran 23:38 for 5 miles in XC. Set all kinds of School Records and Course Records in his first season of college. Unfortunately he got a girl pregnant. Dropped out of school and never raced again. This guy could have been a World Class Runner is he had some discipline and direction, but he was the product of a poor background and the rest is pretty typical. Oh well.
Ohmygosh! you have to be from the pan-handle to know about Fred Carley. He was the man back in the day and then he coached a brillaint High schooler Dolly Harrison I think her name was, he is still legend in those parts....The midnight run that you reference must be the Billy Bowlegs Midnight run which is still going strong, and thats the very race where I met Boston Billy Rogers who placed a close 2nd to the winner that year, and proclaimed afterwards that it was the most humid race he had ever done in his life. Incidentally BB Midnight run was my first ever road race in the US when it was a straight shot down Hollywood Blvd and was infact a 3 miler then......

I ran a sub 5 minute mile as well at 11 years old and was down to 4:39 by 8th grade. Bet you never heard of me.
Wow Sarah, I thought for sure no one had heard of him. Small world, huh? You know of how Carley turned out in terms of his HS and collegiate career? I'm originally from Shalimar by the way.

Your story sounds fine until you say he set records at UTEP in 1979. Do you know who was going to UTEP back at that time?
UTEP had a string of individual NCAA XC titles in the late 70s, and of course, Alberto Salazar was there at the time.
the new kenyans there are always new kenyans
Phil McCavity from Glasgow, he's pretty handy.

This would be a different Alberto Salazar than the one who was at Oregon, I take it. Or did you mean Salazar was competing on the college scene then?
Those UKEP (University of Kenya at El Paso) teams were dang near strong enough to win team titles in World X-C back then. Besides all those Kenyans, they also had that Nyambui hack from Tanzania. I ran against those guys a few times ... errr, let me rephrase that ... I was in some races they ran.
Phil Raschker.
Albert Chepkurui ran 26:50 for 10000 meters.
