Youre a 3:38/13:20 guy who just graduated. What's next???

1:48 (flat) speed on a 13:20 guy would be pretty exceptional I think. How many top college guys now (Jenkins, Ches, Rotich, Campbell) could run both of those times? Not many, I don't think. That would be a pretty good kick in the 5k on the national scene if the race is slow. I'd work on my kick and try to make a team there.

Assuming normal speed, I see what you mean. Get a part time job, live at home for a year, and try to put yourself on the map with a fast 5k or 10k for a sponsor. If that doesn't happen after a year or two, you might have to give it up.

Your 3:38 marathon PR isn't all that bad, but you will have to do some more training if you want to achieve the goal of qualifying for Boston. But don't worry I think you can make it with a bit of luck and good race conditions. Have you tried Jeff Galloway's walk break method? This program is designed for new runners, like yourself, that are looking to break into the sport. Just give the process time and don't get discouraged. Make sure you get some good gear s well.

I think there are plenty of college distance guys that can run 1:48. If you can take1 second per lap off your 5k pr you're at 13:08. Still good in the US but that won't get you into any world championship finals. Take that 1:48 speed to the 10,000 like Mo and Galen. Double 13:08 and you're at 26:16. Assuming your training for the 10k goes well you could be at 27:16 or possibly faster.

You could also go the route of 3:38 that still wants to focus on the 1500. You would need to improve your 800 to 1:45 to have a shot in the international 1500 scene.

Congrats, you have similar college PR's to Galen Rupp, Bernard Lagat, Chris Solinsky, Chris Derrick, and Dathan Ritzenhein... If not better.

I am pretty sure the OP isn't saying he has those times, he is using them as a hypothetical.

The typical letsrun response would be anything slower and you're a hobby jogger. Anything faster you're probably taking drugs. And unless you went to an Ivy League school or Stanford your education is worthless.

your speed suggests that you're aerobically challenged and you need to work on your stamina. 3:38 suggests 13:10 with proper training: 150miles a week

during base and 90 during season with 3 killer sessions a week:10*400m at

1500m race pace, 5*1000m at 3000m race pace and 5*2000m at 5000m race pace (all current). In base you should be doing 2*10 mile tempo a week.

Interesting hypthosis. The 5000m may be arguably better than the 3.38 anyway, and why was he focusing on the 1500m when he could run that?

As a real life example, Chuck PT (CIS) from Laval has run 1.47 and 3.38, with a 7.53 indoor 3000. Does he try and get faster (this is Canada btw) and maybe make the national team (only Brannen seems as the solid, but aging, 1500m guy at sub-3.35) in the 1500m, or move up to 5000m, where there is really only Levins at the moment as a solid sub-13.20 guy - assuming Ahmed sticks to the10000m, and Hughes the Steeple.

Your post certainly is imagination time. No runner who ran 1:48, 3:38, and 13:20 in college is doing a marathon within a year of graduation.

This runner either stays with his college coach with a small contract and/or part time job, and focuses on the 5k. A college runner who ran 3:38/13:20 is a 5k guy, not a 1500m guy.

Or he joins either the Oregon Track Club or Bowerman Track Club, and still focuses on the 5k. He can still do XC and a 10k, but he definitely isn't doing any longer road races for a few years.

The reason for going to the roads, xc, 10k is there may be more chance for success. 13:20 is Rupps 10k pace.

13:20 would be 11th on the descending order list for USATF in 2014. I think a college athlete running that wouldn't have a problem finding a group.

Sorry, I don't waste my time on hobby joggers.

I'd probably get a job with regular hours and no overtime. Running 70-90 miles doesn't take up that much time and race at all distances knowing that my job frees me up to explore and experiment without worrying about racing to support myself. I'd probably keep mostly to the seasons I ran in school, but put some road races into the mix and especially some longer ones, up to marathons, in the later fall or very early spring.

But you know, it's hard to imagine what I'd have done if I'd been that slow.

So Ryan Hill (3:38/13:26 in college) has made a bad choice to focus on track 5000m?

This isn't about good or bad plans for current elites. This is a what would you do if you were a 1:48, 3:38, 13:20 guy just out of college.

If those were my prs i would explore the 10k and longer. My reason is even if I improved in the shorter distances I'm still far off competitive pace.

Really? If you focus was on 1500m during college, and you have been on relatively low mileage, you should still have a lot of room to improve in 5000m.

13:20 is only two sec slower than Rupp's college PB and one sec slower than Derrick's. (Okay, both are 10k guys, but they certainly haven't given up on 5k.) And as I mentioned above, 6 sec faster than a guy who made the final of the last World Championships.
