In the 19th century, tens of thousands of people crowded in standing room only to see match races involving Walter George.
The olympics began the ruin of track by robbing it of money and turning it into a quadrennial event. But road racing completed its ruin by robbing it of fans, turning running into an exercise party rather than an athletic contest. Color runs are the culmination of this attitude and road racers have nobody to blame but themselves for their existence.
But the real irony is that all the Jim-Fixx hype about marathoning being healthy is increasingly being proven false.
In the 19th century, tens of thousands of people would gather to watch multiday walking competitions. To be blunt, there was not much to do in those days.
Really, you don't think the downfall of track has to do with the rise of professional baseball, basketball, football, soccer, and hockey? It's because of the draw of... road running? What in the world goes on in that brain of yours?
