I started the 5km running very smooth, breathing pretty normal. I looked at my watch at 0.5 miles and the pace was 5:30. I quickly slowed down and reset to 5:40 (my time goal).
Did I mess a breakthrough? Should I have stayed at 5:30 which felt really good to be honest?
Doubt it. If you were truly fit enough to run 5:30 pace, you should have been jumping out of your skin that last mile, and probably run a 5:25 for mile 3. Did that happen?
Oh, and stop looking at your watch during 5Ks. Run them by feel, trying to get your maximum effort out of the race. Evaluate the splits afterwards to see if you are making pacing mistakes. There is a possibility that you psyche yourself out seeing a fast split at mile 1.
