ok, to be as upfront as possible....I am a 4:20 miler, 15:19 5k runner, and 1:14 half marathoner. When I enter these times into mcmillan running it says the following...
6:02-6:54 easy runs 60-85%
6:07-7:12 long runs Heart rate 60-85%
6:59-7:42 recovery jog Heart rate 60-70%
Heres the catch... When I actually put a heart rate monitor on and run at lets say 70% my pace to that heart rate equivalent is 8:10-8:20. Basically at the training paces that mcmillan is giving me for my pr's.... they are way too hard as far as heart rate is concerned. Theres no way I can run 6:07 pace right now for a long run and have a heart rate that is 85% of max or lower. At 6:07 pace my HR is almost 90% of max. I've tested this with multiple heart rate monitors and old school timer and pulse on neck.
This leaves me wondering what this means... Do I not have the aerobic fitness I should? Is mileage too low? (Current mileage 35-40 miles/ week). I am a mid foot strike and cadence is typically 179 or higher during all my runs. I would like to start increasing my mileage up to 80 miles a week. Should I be aiming for these paces even if they are causing my HR to be way too high?
If you have any questions or can help me answer mine I would appreciate it. Thank you letsrun!
