I am working on the Week That Was for this week and am going to have something about the Shamrockin' Run 8-K in New Orleans which had $70,000 in prize money + a $15,000 WR bonus and deep results as 7 guys broke 23:00. In trying to figure out how deep that was for a US road race, i headed over to http://www.arrs.net/BT_8K.htm and saw that there was an incredibly deep road race in new port beach in 1983 where 15 or 16 guys broke 23:00.
Old-timers, help give me a history lesson. What was the race? How did they get so many studs there in December? What was the prize money? Who won? I only know the finishers starting in th.

The name of the race appears to be the Sub-4/Caprola 8k

That was back when runners actually raced more than twice a year. Track, XC, Roads, Marathons you name it. Heck, there were college guys in the LA-San Diego area running 2:13 - 2:14 marathons in between seasons off of basic mileage with a long run thrown in once a week.

Filbert Bayi and Chris Fox get 31 and 32, ha ha, think I'd have stayed in bed for that one.
From the masters news clips, looks like the times were local class the next year ('84) so probably one of those races that had the big money for one year and not much of a history otherwise.
Ken Young must have the full race results in the database for '83 and we really do need to know who finished 1 through 6. -

According to the PaceMeister a 23:00 8k is equal to a 23:08 5 mile.

The runner-up would set the world record in the 5000 about a year after that race.

You're mixing up races. Moorcroft was runnerup at Runners World. Rojo cited the 1983 Sub4 race. -

Yes you are correct. I did mix them up. -

Thanks. I scanned the arrs.net page for a search link but didn't see the connect link to more.arrs.net

fixed that for you. and finally...prize money? LOL -
I ran the Sub 4 8k in 1982 and remember it as a race where you just took off and tried to hang on to the pack as best you could. I vaguely remember coming through 2 miles in just over 9:00 and being in 20-30 place. Fearing of blowing up crossed my mind but then I jsut said run as hard as I can for as long as I can. Think I finished in low 23.20's and probably around 25th place. No prize money but the satisfaction I held on and competed with the big dogs.
that was good enough -
There used to be a popular 8K evening race in Newport Beach called Bastille Day I think in the 90s.
They had some top masters show up and run well and set records. But this probably isn't the event you were looking for. -
This is for Edward in case the link didn't work, throw in a 2:18 for good measure and 4 2:20's. The guy ranked 7th ran a 3:57 mile...all from the same school.

Wasn't that basically what AlSal did when he debuted with a 2:09? Used up his eligibility and went to race in Oregon kit?
Guys back there didn't have income from shoe company deals and were not afraid to go earn a living on the roads. -
This race was the Sub4 national team championship where teams entered 5 runners with 3 counting (winning team was determined by adding the best 3 times of a team, not best 3 places). Winning team won $5000, 2nd - $3000 and 3rd - $1000. The winning individual won a Porsche 911 which was driven in front of the field. FYI the winner did have a drivers license. The winning team was New Balance w/ Bickford, Curp and Gorman and the 2nd team was Nike 4-Corners w/ Shahanga, Scrutton and Pfeifle. Can't remember 3rd place team.
