I have just started running, but I realize I have issues with distance and performance because of my abnormal gait. My friend recommended insoles but I want to know:
Are insoles important for a runner? Have they ever fixed a problem you've had while running? If you had to say one insole was the best, which one would it be and why?

I've tried super_feet insoles, both the green and black, and didn't have any luck with them. I'm going to try Dr. Scholl's Active Series Insoles. Walmart has them for about $20.00.
So I have the Superfeet Green to help with overpronation, but I run with the Ascis GT seriies which is structure. Is that OK?
Only you know the answer to that. If wearing Superfeet Green allows you to run pain free continue wearing them. If you think you are being over-corrected you can try wearing your replacement insoles in a neutral shoe.
I wear the aetrex insole with the metatarsal arch.
I'm a forefoot striker and the balls of my feet began hurting about ten years ago.
The metatarsal arch seems to expand the area of impact so that the balls of my feet aren't absorbing 100% of the impact.
Ten years ago I thought I was going to have to give up running...they proved to be a life saver.
Also... I buy my minimalist shoes (the Nike Free & Skechers Ride 3) a size larger and insert a flat spenco insole beneath the aetrex insole for a softer landing.
I've tried superfeet orange and while it did take a few weeks to feel comfortable in them, I no longer have any plantar fasciitis issues.

So you buy minimal shoes and you add padding to it?

Yep...that's what I do.
I don't buy minimalist shoes just to have "minimalist shoes," I use them them
as a starting point and modify them to make a shoe that works for me.
As I stated: I'm a forefoot striker who likes a soft landing in an extremely light and flexible shoe. I don't like heavy bulky shoes with all their anti-pronation and stabilizing gimmicks.
