It's a national championship not a team workout. His job was to win the race, not help some other guy and them potentially lose.

Soratos chose his strategy because he thought it'd result in victory. No one forced him to run the way he did.

And here I was, thinking that the point of a race is to cross the finish line first, not to "run the most like a man." Silly me.

It's called racing bro. Ches is a tactically savvy racer. He does what he has to do to win. And since that he has so many events he's trying to score points in for his team, he tries to win by running as slowly as possible to conserve energy.

It's not being a coward, it's just called being smart and tactical.

How much faster could Ches have gone? It would have been suicide trying to up the pace to pass Soratos much earlier than Ches did. He was trying to drop Ches.

Cheserek was entered in 3 different events - an inherently courageous act - and had to be smart about how he raced.

That being said, Soratos move was definitely balsy. Didn't pay off against an unrested Ches so I'd go more along the lines of Soratos racing like an idiot (imagine he had waited till the last 600 and gunned a sub 1:20) and Ches raced smartly.

Somebody's got to be in second place at some point and entertain hopes of making a winning move later. How is that cowardly?

King Ches is black. Really black. Didn't see any Asian runners in the meet to be honest.

It's also worth noting that Queen Ches tried to pull the same gutless tactic against his own teammate in the 3K, but Jenkins still punked him. Ches is probably walking around today saying that he let Jenkins win.

I agree with this. In a national championship, you do what you have to do to win. A race is a race. Ches was able to hang out to that outrageous pace Soratos set and then surpass it. He was looking for the national title, not a buddy-buddy share-the-work gut-fest around the track with some guy he doesn't even know.

Cheserek did not try to draft of Jenkins and then outkick him at the end. In fact, it was another runner entirely who made the first move at the end of the race, to which Cheserek responded.

About the same way I feel about Leo Manzano. Not a lot of respect there.

I like how Soratos ran the last part of the race, though the pacing was off, much better than Cheserek, and both of them demonstrated their tremendous speed and abilities. However, everyone ran like wimps the first 600, including Soratos.

The race is - and should be - over a mile, not 800 meters or a 10k.

Yada, yada, blah, blah. In truth, I actually understand why the foreigner Cheserek ran as he did...and he can't actually be blamed for it. The underlying point of my rant was that Soratos went against the grain and would not accept the early pedestrian pace. I don't really care why he did it, and I don't really care if it was idiotic. What I appreciate was that he pushed early when the rest of the field would have settled for yet another championship, umm, "race" made up of 99 percent jogging that is topped off by 1 percent sprinting. Soratos has good enough 400 speed that he could have played that game as well, but he went for it nonetheless.

Depends on how they celebrate. If they're out there drinking lame green beer, eating "Irish" stew made with beef instead of lamb meat, and listening to anything other than traditional Irish music, then I don't have a lot of respect for those phonies either. Besides, I never said I liked Soratos; I only said I like the way he ran his race.

The goal is to win. People who win races are not "cowardly." I don't know how this widespread mistaken notion about "cowardice" took hold at letsrun, but it's both jejune and stupid.

Pretty sure you're trolling, but nobody gives a damn if you "run like a man" and lose. Were you one of those high schoolers who went out in sub-60 for the 5K and ran 19:00?
