I have lost all respect for this aiden tooker kid. Beating an autistic kid who celebrating a victory.

Why lose respect the kids won a national title already this is Branigans 4th time losing a state championship by less than a second. Tooker is a great guy and I actually meet up and run with Branigan. In my opinion allowing Branigan to win only due to his condition would be disrespectful as his wish is to not be treated differently and in refusing to beat him it would be treating him differently.

At least that kid dived and won. Not like the time Miles Batty dived at NCAAs and still lost to Andy Bayer. Almost looks as dumb as celebrating too early.

Someone get a comment from Dan Wilson.

By the way, I think the title of the video (nothing to do with me) is a bit harsh. I believe this race came in the middle of a fairly heavy racing schedule for Ovett, who was pretty flat that night. If you look at his expression you can see that he saw the funny side, and took it well, as he did with the Tom Byers "run away rabbit" race.

happened to me in the 1985 NYS Section 11 state indoor mile qualifier. Yep, kicked myself on that one for a long time.

When Centro did this a few weeks ago--did not lose--his fans defended him. Several people pointed out saving celebrations til after crossing the finish line, but fans claimed Centro won, so no big deal. Celebrating early is a big deal, and it is a sign a good coach looks for, and works with a runner to fix. Who knows why Salazar lets Centro get away with early celebrations.

Branniagan has run something like 8:52. He does not need (and probably does not want) to be patronized by being allowed to win.

If this has happened to Brannigan multiple times (as another poster had shared), then Brannigan needs to learn how to be more aware of his surroundings.

My favorite pre-finish line celebration has always been Eamonn Coghlan when he won his first global title in 1983, 5,000m (after two previous 4th place finishes in the Olympics). Not an example of losing due to celebration, but cool all the same. Last lap:

He's so confident that he's got it won, he's literally celebrating from 130m out before he even passes Dmitriyev. Slow-mo at 8:50 and 9:37 into the vid.

It's not really about looking stupid, it's the fact that he underestimated the competition. The fact is that on the track he works under the same rules as everyone else. That may be the only place in the world that he's like everyone else and letting him win would be disrespectful to him. Acting as if he can't handle himself is just not fair to him or anyone else.

Awesome link to that Coghlan victory. That was golden. In a WC no less.

New York State Championships are no stranger to this phenomenon.
