I definitely know the kid you're describing. It felt kind of like watching Mohammed Aman. Potential is very good, should be fun to watch him develop, anticipating big things in the 800.

The answer to this question is probably 4:05 1500m. Maybe he'll do more with his speed than others with that 400m and 8k time. Maybe he'll run much better.

You kidding? I know tons of 26:30 / 4:05 guys. Most of then top out at 56.0 for 400m. A guy with 49.5 AND 26:30, if legit, should be way faster. Assuming equal shape....

Unrelated, but is this guy from Africa? East Africans are the only people I've seen who can have that kind of build (6' / 132 lbs) and not look anorexic. I knew a Somalian who was probably 6'3 and about 130...he made compression shorts look like basketball shorts. But I'll be damned if he wasn't the smoothest runner I've ever seen. 1:55 / 50.x guy.

The kid only ran 1 year of track in highschool and only 2 years of xc before coming to college. He has a build similar to an Asbel Kiprob but just slightly bigger.

There was a kid in D3 in the mid-200s, forget his name, who had to be about 6'5" and about 150 pounds soaking wet who ran low 47s. No blocks.

Really can't remember his name, but that kid was a freak.

haha, Nope he is not African, he's white, but he doesn't really look unhealthy. he does kinda have a build similar to an stereotypical east African runner.

Although, not the same person I think you're talking about. The 3rd fastest 800 runner in DIII right now has a near identical build, maybe an inch taller, to what is described here and has run 24:57 for 5 miles. I'd imagine he can run south of 50 in the 400 as well.

Carey just ran 49.X on a flat track and won his conference 400m. He has only run 153 this season though and lost in a 155 race at his conference meet. Strange cuz he won the 800m outdoors last spring.

I'd have this kid run the 800 for a couple years instead of the 1500, and let him develop into a miler as he gets more experience with distance running. Most D1 athletes running under 3:50 for the 1500, will be running at least 25:00 for an 8k. Once he can sub 25:00 minutes, sub 50, and sub 1:50 800 then he should shooting for low 340s in the 1500.

As of right now, a good 400 time and a mediocre 8k time doesn't give much indication of what 1500m time he'll run, could be 4:10-3:50. The best way to find out is to have him race a few of them, but the potential to be a very good mid distance runner is there.

It probably depends on what coach he's running under. He seems talented enough to be decent almost anywhere but it will take a coach who consistently develops top runners (not recruit major talent or shop at Kenya-Mart), as well as someone who is very patient.

I would think running 1:52 or so shouldn't be a problem this year.

It also depends on the kid's patience, desire and life outside running. There's many talented runners who fall through the cracks due to their lack of dedication and long-term focus.
