Among elite runners a 3:43 1500 may not sound too good, but to the average Joes of this world it is an awesome accomplishment. What is a shame is that there is no real awards for a runner who can post this time. Oh, they will win regional races or place well in the Big Ten or Big East. However, despite all the work and dedication it takes to post such a time there are very little financial rewards. Most of these guys retire after college or open a sneaker store. I know of such a runner who opened a running store a few years ago. The only difference was he posted a 13:45 5000, which is comparable in talent to a 3:43+ 1500-meter runner. These guys were the super stars in high school and even to some extent in college. However, after school they are just like anybody else trying to make a living. A lot of them just fade away behind a desk. For every Alan Webb or Ritz there are talented guys in the background that just weren't great enough to get noticed.
Maybe an organization like the Hansons can help such a runner get to the next level. It is a shame even to waste 3:43 or 13:50 talent. Remember there is always a chance that these runners will develop into competitive sub 3:36 1500-meter runners by the time they are 30. The US produces the most 3:40+ 1500-meter runners in the world. It would be a shame to waste that resource.
