Why are runners so intent on proving to the world that they are runners? I'm talking about the type of person who's always posting something on Facebook like, "You know you're a runner when..." I don't see this in any other sport. I think running attracts people who never had a life before they took up running and still don't have much of a life outside their group run circles. It's sad to see people who are otherwise decent act so douchy.
You know you're a runner when you whine about other runners.
Pretentious isn't the word.
Arrogant or condescending is what you're looking for. If you can't hang, you can't hang, and other runners will let you know it.
I say this with love, but I see a lot of professional runners as prissy.
No pros wanted to run at Madison Square Garden because they track wasn't good enough. Some pros won't run certain XC courses because it's too "rutty." Some won't run if there's too much pollen.
In the long run, this hurts the sport.
Football players hate playing Thursday night football. They do it because, they have to, and because in the long run it's good for the NFL. Baseball players hated night games originally. Again, they did it because it was good for baseball.
To grow the sport, I think we need to do things that are good for the sport, even if it's not necessarily popular with the athletes..

It's not even the elite runners doing this. I'm talking about the middle of the pack people with training blogs, constant Facebook posts that show pics of their Garmins, or repeated shout-outs of how they heart their running partners. You don't see the guy shooting 85 bragging that he's a golfer, or the guy with a 150 average saying, "you know you're a bowler when your balls are 16 lbs."

Why do people like you feel so determined to prove that you are so much cooler than other runners? Inferiority complex or what?
i'm gonna guess they do it to get their paycheck on the 1st and 15th so they can feed their fam. not for "the fans" or for "the good of the sport", as great as it sounds gramps.

I never said I was cooler or better or worse than anyone. Why are you so determined to make an argument out of this? Go back to playing Minecraft.
this could describe the 10% of crazies within any group of people who are really into their hobbies/way of life and let everyone know about it - yoga, homebrewing, eating vegan/natural, photography, camping, traveling, whatever. it's not a runner-specific phenomenon.

Yes, you're right. But the people making the decisions to hold Thursday games did so for those reasons, youngster.
As for the regular public (not elites/professionals), I don't think joggers/runners share about their hobby any more than other hobbyists do about their hobby. I just think that running is very popular and people like sharing what they are doing in general therefore you may see more of the sharing online. I see lots of people sharing about their rock-climbing, book-writing, model airplane flying, hair/makeup creations, acting acumen, etc.
Sharing is a form of self-pride and as an individual we want to share our accomplishments we feel proud about obtaining or hope to obtain. It is in our human nature to want others to give us praise. It makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I personally like feeling warm and fuzzy inside, don't you?
I have typically found the opposite. Most runners, including the gifted ones, are humble and selfless creatures. Maybe the humility comes from all the pain endured, the low profile of the sport or perhaps the simplicity of it all. But runners, by and large, are pretty down to earth.
There are exceptions of course. But are the people with the 13.2 stickers really runners? Will leave that for another thread.
What's the difference between a 14:10 guy and a 15:10 guy? The 15:10 guy actually thinks he's good.
There is an inverse relationship between time spent expressing one's identity as a runner and mileage. Imagine Pre or Viren tweeting about their daily runs. All running blogs should be deleted by the NSA, esp ones written by mommywhoruns or the like.
Because I generally think I'm better than anyone who can't finish a marathon. I have 7 different Adidas Boston Marathon jackets to prove it. All different colors. Who cares that I ran as an invitational runner and never qualified. 99% of the general population doesn't know the difference between a 2:55 and a 4:55 anyways. They just know I've run farther than they'll ever run, baby!!!
I see the same behavior with weight lifters, cyclists, and swimmers.
Pros are excused, since they are paid to promote their sport and brand.The others....neophyte runners. Esp on Instagram. They tend to be the types who talk about their education or schooling at parties, have poor music taste, like Weimaraners and other trendy dogs, don't wear make up, etc.Very annoying trend.
