Yuck!
My club has adopted a highway in my hometown. It’s really done wonders as far as good publicity for the club. The townsfolk aren’t as eager to call the police every time the group causes them to stop longer at intersections or wherever while we’re out for group runs, and we get more cooperation whenever we need to call the Village Hall for anything.
I have picked up some pretty disgusting crap over the years doing this but Saturday was the apex. I found a small syringe on the side of the road. I knew no diabetic was going to shoot themselves up in the car and then throw it out the window. I assume it was heroin.
Also, half of what we pick up is tobacco related. Cigarettes, lighters, matches, empty packs and chew boxes. All pretty disgusting. It amazes me how people think that Main Street makes an acceptable ashtray/trashcan. I also think some of the people driving by think I’m working off the community service part of my sentence.
Has anyone else out there done the “Adopt a Highway” scene?
