I have been wanting to time my dog in the mile for a while now. So I took her (1.5 yr old Lab) to my local track. I jumped on my mountain bike and took off. 56/1:52/2:50/3:42!! She made it look easy so I am guessing that someone has a dog that can crush her time...Any Greyhounds out there?
My in-laws have a greyhound, and that dog is freakishly fast. He runs around their fenced-in backyard and it really is amazing how fast he's going. I don't know about greyhounds in the mile though, but I suspect it isn't all that far for them.
Greyhounds are so fast that you can't leave them tethered because if they see a rabbit or a squirrel and bolt off after it, they break their necks when the line becomes taut.

That's pretty funny. I'm tempted to bring my dog to a track and see if he can beat those time. I'm guessing he needs some aerobic work though, so I might give him a few workouts and then taper him for the spring season.
She took the corners well. She was bobing and weaving at first, but then she was ok. She was pretty tired after the final 100 meters, but I think that she could have run faster though 1200m. As of today she has the Lets Run doggie Mile Record!! Bring them on!!
I know it's not my dog. He's a handsome fellow and does well with the chicks, but he's the laziest mutha f'er you'll ever see. He's got about 12-15 miuntes of running in him, then it's time for a nap.
I'm sure that my dog can run at least that fast. She gets about 2 hours of running per day with me while I either run or xc ski. If I'm running she can do circles around me all day. If I'm skiing, she has to keep up on the 30 mph downhills, though the uphills are cake for her - it's similar to mountain biking pace-wise. But I wouldn't consider her fast. There are dogs locally who are world championship winners in sprint mushing and similar dogs for skijoring that can run 20 mph (=3:00/mile) on hardpacked snow for 25 miles.
My dog can run 16 miles in an hour. She can probably run faster but that's the fastest I can bike on my hybrid. She has done this with me twice.
I forgot to mention that she is a tiny female German Short Haired Pointer(40 lbs) and I run and mountain bike trails with her daily...but I have just put her through the road test twice.
My coon hound (it is a mu between a blue tick healer and greyhound) is about as fast a dog I have ever seen. We only live a mile or so from the interstate highway and I have seen him on occasion running alongside 18 wheelers. though not for very far.
I have a bird dog that has wings and can fly. Probably 2 min mile
Mark Carroll's/Amy Rudolph's dog Sidney goes on runs with both of them (the 10-15 milers). I would imagine that dog would crush other dogs in the distance events. Its a ridge back incase people were wondering.

i got a german shorthair too. he's a big one though-about 70-75 pounds. before he injured his leg, he probably could've taken out that record. he was an absolute stud, but now he kinda hobbles a bit. when i was little i'd take him out to go to the bathroom and he'd drag me around on my stomach if he saw a bird.
I've got a fast dog. He's a black lab / border collie mix. He's a real nice dog, too. My wife doesn't like him much because she thinks he's too big, and he is slightly on the exuberant side (but calming - 10mos old).
Anybody want him? We'll give him to you for free. We'll drive a long ways to drop him off to the right, loving, responsible owner. Serious.
I had a corndog once. He didn't last long enough for me to time him. Sure looked fast.

I can concur with the GSP (German Shorthaired Pointer) owners that they are tremendous running dogs.
My dog's name is Zola (yes, named after Zola Budd due to combination of speed and clumsiness). She's now 9 years old, but can still run a strong 5 miles. She's a great rabbit, since she runs fartlek the entire course e.g. run fast 100 yards, walk a minute, run fast, etc...
My training partner and I took our dogs out on a measured road mile. Conditions were perfect cool and a flat fast course next to the ocean. We had the pinto hatchback open to yell encouragement. My dog Kyle Heffner was the first to run. He was not too smart about pacing. 46 second first; 1:42 half; he started losing form, seriously , and finished in 3:27. His dog was paced a little better but Kyle still set the WR that day.
