What are the dimensions of the existing indoor space (if you have a specific one in mind)?
New buildings are typically $100/SF and higher depending on circumstances.
A retrofit of an existing bldg would be a comparable expense for just the new track itself. But depending on size of the track (anywhere from 20 to 8 laps per mile) you are talking at least half a million dollars for a retrofit. A new building could be as much as $4 million, and at least one million or 1.5.
I'm an architect so I have some estimating experience.
To be safe a banked track would be around 750K for an 8 laps to a mile track. A building of that size would be a big expense, hence why most indoor tracks are put in old unused buildings like an armory!
Interesting- about 5 or so years ago I asked an engineer/contractor how much it would cost to build from the ground (building a venue the same size as the one at SUNY-Cortland.
His price was much less than 4 million and he said the bulk of the cost would be labor.
I have to add that the track would be unbanked and 200 meters.
It was a couple million- he'd built 400 meter tracks so he had some background.
If you have the building, don't worry about banking it (it might bring the cost down?).
Just from a relatively new ground up facility near me. An international class facility costs in the region of $12-14 million to build.
Does anyone have an idea how much it would cost to put a six-lane unbanked track in an old hockey facility? Should be a large enough space, but obviously would need to install the track and make the facility more track friendly.
I did some research on costs about a year ago for a mondo track surface for a capstone project and found them to range from $1 million to $1.5 million (for an 8 lane). You would need a warehouse or something in the range of at least 55,000 sq ft to fit that in and also have restrooms and locker rooms.
Back in '91 it was $1M to bill a facility for 180m 4 lane track, non-mondo surface. So you are probably looking at $1.5-2.0 for a basic flat facility. Plus $100k for banking.

Why would anyone want a 180m track? Strange distance.
The indoor track in Stockholm was originally 180m. It was upgraded to a 200m track in 1996 for the European Champs.

Didn't that configuration go from a 6 lane to a 4?
I'm guessing that was the result of trying to fit a larger track into an existing space. The stands are fixed.
OP
You really don't want to bank a track in a college campus. this way it can be used as a multi use facility, and the AD department will be more likely to approve the funding.
This is what Yale did. Then they got a large donation from a passed away alumni who stated the money to be used for track and field, since I guess he was a member way back. So, what did they do? They built a banked track on top of the already existing track. Just throwing their money away. It went from being an ok place to run, to a horrible place to run. The banks are too steep. They should have copied the Reggie Lewis Center's
Wait, Yale's track is now banked?!?!
Ran on that thing when it had individual panels and then when it was a flat solid surface. Now it is banked? Any more seating or just added the banked track?
