Well at least they don't make her pay back her hard earn prize money. In the end, it was just supplements and she trusted someone she should not have.

Glad the ban is backdated and she is clear to compete next year.

I thought they read the tea leaves/circumstantial evidence with a drug like EPO and could only tell something was abnormal but could not tell what PED was used.

Please educate me.

? It is possible to detect synthetic EPO in the blood. Are you wondering if she was caught for a biopassport irregularity vs. direct evidence of EPO? When they name a drug, it means they found that particular drug.

I don't know if they have made any changes how recombinant hEPO is made, but years ago they would produce it using chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. EPO is a protein, but the molecule is modified by the producing cells by adding sugar chains to it (glycosylated). Human and hamster cells glycosylation slightly differently, hence one can test if the EPO in the system came from a pharmacy, not from her own kidney.

At least she is still banned after ratting out her sources and other athletes. She could have been let go with no punishment.

As I don't run in the marathon anymore, my wife and I went to our customary viewing spot just past the 24 mile mark at the bottom of a downhill. Jeptoo was moving pretty well at that point and I turned to my wife and told her that it looks like a five minute mile. It was actually about 4:48. How naïve of me to think she could've done that fair and square!

Knowing no athlete will ever get a lifetime ban. The first ban needs to be a minimum six years to take the athlete out of the OG/WC cycle (not that the athlete cares these days with the potential earnings on the road have diminished the prestige of the OG and WC).

All earnings must be paid back and medals forfieted.

None of this is ever gonna happen.

The message with this "sentence" is no big deal I am off for two years and thats all. It rewards the risk the because the benefit ration is higher There is a conferred benefit even after you are off the PEDs.

To the poster who asked about EPO if it was from one of the drug companies they often "tag it" so testers can find the tag so to speak. This is how Muhlegg was caught in the SLC winter OG. They found the marker on epogen because the drug company alerted testers becuase they did not want their drug misused in that way.

IAAF is seeking to have the ban extended to four years,

IAAF also filed an appeal, requesting that the athlete’s period of ineligibility be increased to 4 years, due to aggravating circumstances which it argues warrant an extended period of ineligibility.

What can the aggravating circumstances be? Has there turned up more positives in retests? Is there something in her bio passport profile too? Was she positve for more substances than EPO?

With her appeal, Ms Jeptoo filed an application to stay the execution of the challenged decision. Ms Jeptoo requests this stay in order to be able to resume training and to be able to participate in IAAF competitions during the CAS proceedings.
