No, at 53 I was running 15 mile progression runs, finishing very hard.
So why post that you are doing this?

I know it is a mistake to respond to this instead of just ignoring it, but I can also bump this thread with a response and therefore solicit some good responders, so, without further delay.......
Because you are fred and I am Skuj??
I also want to add a major factor in all this which really came to light today as I was conducting one of these microsessions on lovely, soft, green grass:
I simply cannot stand the feeling of running on pavement anymore. I'm absolutely done with it. Dirt is ok, but grass feels wonderful to me. I was never going to run long distances around and around the fields available to me, hence my gravitating towards this happy little regime.
For the record I did 9min jog + 6 short strides + 24sec sprint + 8:20 jog today. (Plus pushups and pullups afterwards.) I admit it looks laughable on paper. But it felt like a fine session. I was on the field for half an hour, soaked in sweat afterwards, feeling thoroughly invigorated. What's not to like? :)
Darren, are you trying to justify this training to yourself or to others? Of course what you propose is not even half serious distance training, but at the same time it's decent exercise, especially for an older dude. Can you run a 63 quarter in the summer? Who the hell knows. Give it a try and have fun doing it.

Thanks Dude!! :)
Someone else has privately suggested to me that what I am doing here is quitting running, but I don't know how to quit, so therefore I am doing these micro-sessions so that I can still feel like a runner.
He may have a point!!
Skuj,
The only thing I want to see you discussing right now is this!!!

LOL, honestly not me, but funny.
Damn, in retrospect I should have called this thread "Retirement From Running - Almost", and talked about how I want to do the minimum amount of running that makes me still feel like "a runner", whatever that means.
Don't you miss your boy the430miler? Where has he been? You were one of the few posters that he looked up to.
He's a good kid. I miss him. I hope he didn't retire.
Hey, Skuj. Stop bumping this thread by posting under a fake name then replying to yourself. The thread is played out. Let it go.
So what was the workout today?
Thanks for asking, fred.
I did a mile jog, 8x50m strides, 100m push, a mile jog, then pullups.
You're ahead of 95% of 53 year olds with that.
Far better to feel good than just being able to hobble 10 miles every second weekend.
Or even worse, become a streaker.
Gonna run my 10th day in a row today. :)
In the OP I talked about 1600m jog warmup, but really it must be 3k or longer. I just can't warmup on on less. So most of these sessions will be 5-6k vice 4k or less.
Well it didn't take long for you to make your comeback.
Seems like many of the posters forgot to account for your age.
For a 53yo 400-800 guy - or man should we say - the regime you described is fine.
Could be improved by adding variety, and probably more rest considering the age. What I'm worried about is the CNS: hitting it every day at 50+.
Throw in some hills, plyos, weight even maybe, longer sessions, more contrast between days etc.
Basically, for variety and motivation, use your imagination, online resources, books. Don't get me going on books... Since you already probably know your Daniels and Lydiard et al from your 40 years of distance running, try something different for a change: Verkhoshansky, Radcliffe, Hiserman. Komi even if you're feeling real hardcore.
Oh, and good luck with the goals for 400m you stated!
For forming an opinion on them (since you asked for it :), what are your 400m PRs - all time and Masters?

Thanks Meb FTW. I will get into hills. Recent achilles issues scared me away, but I'm fine now. Maybe today!!
I jokingly refer to myself now as a recovering distance runner. 400 PR 54.8sec back when Reagan was Pres. In the last 3-4 years I might have run a 63 or 64 but I didn't focus on it.
Stop bumping this thread, Skuj. It was dead for a good reason. You're the biggest narcissist on this board. It was a better place when you were banned.
