Why did Solares pick "Thursday Night Races at the Armory" as a race to run fast? They are always low key and generally comprise of local runners. There are plenty of meets this weekend and the next few weeks, where he could have competed. In the homestretch he was running all the way out in lane 4....
I'm sure he had his reasons. Why don't you ask him?

That's a good question, but as someone who also competed in this meet, I'm very glad that he did. Incredible to witness.
Watch and discover his reasons

We also have changed the title of the thread to represent how great of an accomplishment it was given how 2nd place was over 4:20.
This is pretty cool. I like it when races come out of nowhere. Reminds me of the Pre-Internet era.
Does anyone know if there was even a rabbit in this baby? What did he go out in? The video only shows the last lap.
Splits were roughly 60.4 (409m), 59.8, 58.7, 57.8. No rabbit, and he was going around lapped runners on the final lap.
no rabbit - fairly even. Our announcer Paul Leak recognized him right away and shouted out splits. The split times here are at the finish line, so actual splits are always a little bit faster (but less so as the race goes on, obviously):

But yeah, by himself the whole time. I don't thing he realizes how strong a race that is by oneself - he talks about hanging it up before Rio in the video interview.
He may run 1000m tomorrow. Real nice guy; exciting race to watch.

Didn't Stogs go 3:50 m & 4:07 y as a HSer?
The track is short.

Thats a fantastic result! Great guy, too. He was also an all state tennis player in high school and perfect scored his SAT. Rumor had it back then that he got a full ride to Rice but had a visa issue. Best of luck Solares.
Awesome performance from Solares. He is such a talent (total understatement).
Reminds me of a race I was in at Gainesville, Florida (UF), where Mark Carroll ran 3:55 or so and I ran 4:18, almost getting lapped in an indoor mile!!!
Amazing to see guys in full flow.

I agree. I didn't run, but was there to watch. My buddy who ran the mile also told me after he checked in that the top-seeded time was 4-flat. We both got a chuckle out of this until the race went off.
I think most of us have seen faster miles in person before, but when you don't expect it, it's pretty freakin' cool.

Before you rush to judgment, that time might me faster than he has run in the last year or two, but it is not a PR. While it is surprising to see him run this fast early in the indoor season, the result is something I would not think he was incapable of. Btw, Pablo has run several 1:47s/3:55s, albeit they were outdoors and this guys has been in some really big time races.
Seems like a really good dude.

Yeah I saw the sheet too. We were apparently lined up by time, so when i saw the "first seed" I was skeptical and Pablo started in the alley. By the time he went by, I was confused until I heard the time. Blew by me like I was a statue.
3:56 solo in January, yet he's thinking about this being his last year ?!?
