Did you wear sweat pants or long johns back in the 1980s? I just imagine Rodgers out there running cold miles in some kind of cotton, but which one? Did you guys chafe at the ankle and groin?

Sweats. I don't recall chafing, at least when training. Mostly I remember the weight, especially when the sweat turned to ice.
Ha! I went to Sears and bought a pair 'o white thermals. Wore running shorts over them.
And to complete the ensemble, a cotton turtle neck shirt worn under a Frank Shorter Sportswear windbreaker -- and cotton work gloves.
Sweatpants. After a jog you can wear them to Newberry's for a copy of the Times and a diet Tab and still look great.
Standard issue sweat pants when I started, but later Frank Shorter, Bill Rodgers, Sub 4 wind pants. I also had the Nike/Salazar "PR" collection warmup suit that had grey slim cut sweat pants.
I wore sweat pants ... sometimes there was some groin and thigh chafing.
In the late 70s and early 80s "Rocky" pretty much dictated the style.

There was a company in the northeast ... cant remember the name, that made nice running gear, but at the time the price seemed really high.
Somewhere in the mid/early 80s, nylon gear started to become more popular, it was pretty much worthless, even when compared to Walmart "Starter" gear from 10 years ago.
Rain gear was just as bad ... or at least the clothes that I had access to, not much different than a plastic poncho.
Sometimes the "good ol' days" werent always so good. ;-)
Sweats....until tights came out, I believe it was about 1983. I was the first guy in the area to rock tights at the local 5k. They were burgundy since that was the only color the store had. My friends said that I looked like an idiot and it was a stupid fad. I laughed it off and made sure that I kicked their arses that day.
Pastel colored shell suits of course.
Does anyone wear tights anymore?
If it is cold enough, I just wear "running pants". IE:

If it isn't cold enough, just wear longer shorts.
Seriously, I see no need to ever wear tights. Ever.
I lived in MI. We were poor.
In 6th grade Winter ('78-79) I must have had sweatpants, because I did not have anything special. Oh, wait, I remember now I had a polyester track suit that we called a "jogging suit" back then. It was OK, looked just like a track suit (not nylon) from Nike. I also had some Adidas nylon track pants (classic back then). There was a big sale at the Armory each year where they blew out Adidas stuff. The pants were probably $10. Today's deals are much better.
In 7th grade Winter ('79-80) I got a G.U.T.S. Gore-Tex training suit. It was similar to a Moss Brown Gore-Tex suit or Frank Shorter suit, but they were FULL Gore-Tex. This one was just GT on the jacket yoke and sleeves and the pants had no Gore-Tex as I remember.
Strangely, I never put anything under them (except cotton underwear briefs) and never doubled-up with long underwear. The 7th grade year I ran 40-60 mpw over that Winter and ran the Revco Cleveland Marathon and the Old Kent River Bank Run (25km) that May. It was ZERO-20 degrees all the time too.
Cotton turtleneck under jacket, wool or acrylic swim team hat on top, painters gloves most of the time. My Mom bought me some Gore-Tex mittens, but I did not really like the feel of them. When it was really cold I just put another shirt on underneath. What I really needed was some of those wind-block underwear.
By 9th grade winter ('81-82) I had some better clothes and some synthetics to wear in Winter that did not absorb sweat so much.
By 10th grade ('82-83) we had tights and wore those by themselves in cold weather. Sometimes we wore shorts over if we wanted to be cool like the guys at University of Wisconsin. We wore our track pants (nylon or Supplex) over the tights on really cold days.
Didn't we have Sporthill in the 80s? I can't remember. Mostly, I lived in warm climates in the 70s and 80s so I didn't need long pants. Sporthill was one of the first brands I recall owning.
We wore shorts over long underwear in the early '70s. When Sporthill came out, I got a pair of those. My gf/wife made me a couple more. I still have them and wore a pair under my jeans golfing today.
Sweats. I wear long johns skiing.
You must mean the early 70's because by the late 70's tricot nylon running jackets and pants were on the market. By the late 70's both Frank Shorter and Bill Rodgers had a line of running wear. Before that it was mostly sweat pants.
I started runing in HS in 1976. Sweats cotton was what the school gave out. I purchased my 1st nylon suit in 81. Still can hear the swish swish in my head. :)
Yes rono i wore EXACTLY the same long underwear!!

chafing?? nah, back in the 70's and 80's we were tough, dry cracked rough skin that resisted the cold and the sweat soaked cotton. no worries.

Hahaha! My dad STILL wears these when he's running. It's about all he wears them for.
Early 70s we wore ruñNing shorts over long johns. Except one guy that just wore the long johns. I guess he was ahead of his time!

I got a free pair of those nylon pants a few years ago when Bill Rodger's running store went out of business. They're terrible! But I still wear them all the time. Great pre-race warmup pants, because you know nobody will steal them.
Sweats- no chafing.
